United Kingdom 2005 Defender 90 Td5 SW Epsom Green
31 mpg
OK In have a 2005 TD5 90 and for at least a year I have been getting 25mpg Max.
Just had a trip to Cornwall and got a stonking 30 mpg. After driving another 129 miles am getting 30.9 mpg.
What's changed ?
Added 1 litre Texaco engine oil in Cornwall. Not sure how long it's been a litre short.
Filled up with Texaco diesel.
Am running on Mud tyres on steels unbalanced so need to keep speed under 50 else get a steering wobbles.
Lots of motorway driving at lower speed than BFG A/T on alloys.

Any thoughts ?

Mk1, With ALL my other cars, I've found what you have said to be true, but I've found the opposite to be the case with our Puma 90.
We have some big distances in Aus, but I've found that I get better MPG around the city than in the country.
I was told that sitting on 100/110kph in a Defender takes a lot of "ooomph" to push it through the air, hense better economy in the suburbs at around 60kph?

I've had 37mpg in my Td5 on a run, but I don't push it. The consumption seems to drop off a cliff on mine at anything over 70mph so I try and stick at between 55-65 like most lorries.
Around town and general driving is 34mpg. I got improved mpg after a tune and better still with 1.2 gearing in the transfer box. Thumbs Up

untill i put my roof rack on, i could get over 30 mpg, thats with a tuned engine and disco cogs in the tranny box. Also that was cruising between 60 and 70. Now with the roof rack, im only getting 26/27 and nearer 20 if i gas it or tow.
I am suprised with yours if your only travelling around 50, mud terrains do make a difference but i wouldn't have though that much..... Rolling Eyes

I also use Ecomax after a flll up, that is probably helping, plus every 4/5th fill up I put 200ml of 2 stroke in.

Interesting as I always had to stick at 55 to 65 like lambley or my mpg dropped like a stone but I've had a disco t box fitted now so I'll see what it's like when I go to pick relatives up from Exeter in a couple of weeks.

Try at 90 to 100 kph and I bet it's a lot better

Mine does about 26 used as a weekend car. It's currently at the garage though. With a multitude of faults. God knows how much it'll cost. Still no problems for 8 months which isn't a bad run for a 14 year old 100k+ car I suppose. 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.

With my Camel Discovery I managed 39mpg 14 km/ltr once. When driving through f France from Lyon to Luxembourg in more or less one go only stop at the toll gates. But I was driving between 80 and 90 km/hr as I was following friends who had there toys on trailers. Laughing Roel

Yes, Gary at Alive did it, well worth the trip. I've been to see him twice now, once for the initial tune and again for a health check/tweak if you like to make sure everything was as it should be. On the second visit I asked him to 'flatten it out' a bit in the low range to stop the sudden surge of power, which he duly obliged. 10/10

In my td5 auto 90 with full roll cage I was getting about 24 average in the UK commuting to work, mix of urban roads and A roads.

In Australia, this improved to about 26.5 mpg, fully loaded with winch, roof tent, loads of heavy spars, camping gear, fridge, etc. Best mpg was about 31 doing a steady 60 for several hundred KMs, worst was crossing the Simpson Desert (1200 sand dunes!) at about 19mpg.

It is defo steady cruising that helps Td5 mpg, whereas mixed speeds and traffic do it no good at all. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

Hi,

I've just started a new contract (at JLR in Solihull, actually Very Happy ) which is a commute of 45 miles one way. I'm doing this in my TD5 90 CSW (140k miles) and have started to measure the mpg

I brim the tank and calculate the mpg from miles driven vs litres of diesel. On the last run my maths told me that I was getting 32.5 mpg. I'm looking to improve on this... any ideas?
