Latest issue with the 110
For those who can now smell the conclusion of their 3 year warranty I am sharing the latest saga with our 110.

Bit of background: Our brake vacuum pump failed and was replaced recently. A week later the steering box failed and was replaced. 3 days later oil was still dripping from the steering box - LRA mechanic discovered that the stealers hadn't tightened any of the pipes going in or out of the steering box. I went spare at the dealer principal. This resulted in a free MoT and 25% off all future servicing and parts. So...

The 110 went in on Friday for its free MoT (and a new passenger seat slider and driver's window mechanism which failed altogether on Wednesday). I rang them up before it went in an described a whining that happens only when cold from 1500 rpm through all the gears until you have used all 6 gears and done about 70mph and until the engine is at full temp. Then it goes. I described it as a loose belt sound, but for safe measure told them that perhaps the noise was coming from the centre of the car/gearing.

Turns out, the diff lock is disintegrating! New one on order and a refit. 10 days of our warranty left and if this had happened in 11 days time, we have been told it would be a £2,000 job!

We'll be extending the warranty.

I'd check the small print in the extended warranty....

When i had my "new" 200Tdi 90 back in 1992, the extended warranty didn't seem worth the paper it was written on (and i was at college so couldn't afford it anyway), but i think it drastically slims down the number of items that are covered. Sad

Will check it thoroughly Thumbs Up Essentially it's another form of insurance, isn't it - and insurers are about as happy at parting with their money as i can't think what!

If you don't mind me asking what's your current mileage on your 110?

I'm already worried since my LR dealer here in Dubai have told me that they don't offer any extended warranty on the defender but the rest of the land rover models they do which just seems ridiculous and unfair. Mad

As said above check exactly what the extended warranty will cover because it will certainly be a lot less than the 3 year warranty you get from new. I know others have found that aftermarket warranty providers often offer higher levels of cover for less money! Andy

There are numerous providers here:

Interstingly one guy on one of the forum posts said he "banked the money instead of paying the premiums and accumulated £16k over a 10 year period!" Interesting concept if indeed you have the willpower to bank it and leave it! I don't!!! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Uff,

Looks like an autodestruction instruction when the guarantee expires.

Mine is also near the end of the guarantee (Dec 2010), now with 80,000 km had more or less all the possible failures. Now the list of failures are in the 60s issues. And I'm quite worry about the guarantee end (here they dont offer an extended one). But due to the amount of failures that I had registered I have a good case against Land Rover if something going wrong.

Last ones:

Air intake manifold seal broken: 110SEB, sound exactly like a loose belt, so better to check
Turbo air intake hose with fisures: To be repaired when the spares arrives in 15 days more
Steering box driping oil: to be repaired when the new steering box arrive.

I would like to had the 100,000 km completed in December to try to detect the most of the problem.

Anyone have a form of this extended insurance that can send to me to see if I can get something similar or better here?

Cheers! Eduardo

110 back from the dealers. New diff. Noise remains.

I have paid close attention to it and now believe that it might be the turbo. It is there only really when cold, but not exclusively now. It is there when i ask for proper power and goes when I come off the throttle. I also believe that there is a lack of power due to a ****ed turbo. Coujld i be right?

It sounds like a very light metal noise, a bit like a belt screech but more definite if you know what i mean.

Eduardo, what did your Turbo problem sound like? Did you mean that yours had a similar sound to a loose belt?

I have ABSOLUTELY NO faith in the mechanics at our dealership. So i'm going to ring LR Assistance (who are awesome) in the morning and get them to come to work to investigate. Then if they agree at least it will go to the dealership immediately and take priority as LR place time pressure on them to fix things brought in by LRA.

I'll keep you posted. Any views on the sound would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up

I had really 2 issues with strange noises.

1.- Admission manifold seal was broken, sound similar to a loose belt (quite noisy) when you accelerate over the 2000 RPM (no matter if is cold or warm)

2.- Turbo hose fisurated with a sound like to be driving in wet small gravel (not noisy but you can hear it) According to my dealer the fisures are very little, otherwise I will feel a lost of power and see black smoke in the exhaust.

I hope that can help you to locate the fault Eduardo

Apparently the Turbo hoses are VERY thin - although im interested, obviously all diesels smoke - so is this more black smoke than normal, or all the time?
