Toss up between weight saving vs strength. Personally steel of me but I'm biased and you need to be in some seriously extreme spots to ever need one.

Steel for me.
Only three battle scars on mine so far and I would say the terrain where I got them was not that extreme

Steel for me, suppose it depends though on how extreme your off road use will be, or whether you are just putting one on for looks alone.

The Camel Trophy used Aluminium but they were thick. There might have been weight savings but that wasn't much I think.
I scratched the front one and bent the rear one a bit, but I used my Camel Discovery.  Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge On my 90 I didn't fit any. My Disco 3 G4 has a front Aluminium again. With some battle scares.
