I suppose first is like a lot of things on a commercial based vehicle i.e. a compromise, Ist gear only makes sense when you try to set off on an incline with a heavy trailer on the back. The 90's not so bad cos we can set off in second, but as you said Glynn the 110 is not quite as light and struggles a bit.

Mine is the same now you mention it (13100 miles). I just put it down to Defender quirkiness/agricultural-ness & my changing up when the revs are too low. 2nd gear needs to be a bit longer as well...... Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Next trip to the stealer IŽll complain about the 2nd synchro and reject the typical.....answer. My warranty ends this year and I can not afford a new GB. No one would repair it anyway. These worries make me wonder of a j@@p

I've had problems with 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and a new gearbox at around 12k miles as a result (about 6 months ago) - I also had a lot of noise from the box in neutral with the clutch out.
New box definitely improved things, but still feels a bit like I haven't fully de-clutched sometimes going from 1st to 2nd 1953 80 1965 Alfa Romeo GT Veloce Sprint 1980 Fiat 124 Spider 2008 110xs |

Not sure about everyone else, but I'm getting really, really, really p****d-off with the dealers, and Land Rover telling me that poor quality is "normal". I've had a new gearbox, 2 new clutches, a new transfer box and two new rear half shafts, and still the transmission sounds like it's 15 years old. It was poor from the forecourt, and hasn't changed with all the work over the last two years!!!
Sorry, don't want to loose the thread, ,but the 1st to 2nd shift on mine is awfull. I can get a nice smooth shift if I do it slowly and methodically, but on a hill or with a heavy trailer, the 90 has almost come to a halt. |

Tried that, but 2nd gear is too high with a heavy trailer. Plus, I hate the smell of burning clutch plate. However, it still doesn't make a poor gearbox good.

LR have agreed to replace my gearbox (32'000 miles) but they are on back order so they have No Idea when they will be available, the Stealers say it could be a matter of days or could run into Weeks.
![]() But at least they are sorting it !! |

Good luck, I hope it's the answer for your Defender. A new gearbox didn't work for me, it was exactly the same, and now getting worse. The technician told me, they aren't allowed by LR to fit NEW gearboxes, they have to be reconditioned. Whether thats by the dealer or a gearbox specialist I'm not sure. Heaven help us if it's the dealer!!!

Well if doesnt work its off to Trading Standards (as not fit for Purpose)
As for a Recon thats a joke, cant they just addmit the Box is of poor design and not suited for the Defender. After all (You cant Pollish a Turd only spinkle glitter on it) |
