Rear Mudflaps
Hi Ryan

We have a recently purchased Defender 90 XS Hardtop (3 months old), we have had a TD5 90 CSW in the past. While pulling our Ifor Williams Livestock Trailer DP120 the both rear mudflaps have burnt themselves against the rear tyre in under 100 miles.

The air buffeting between the trailer and rear of the vehicle means the mudflaps have been pushed forward with air flow and are then pulled up by the rear wheel to the follow affect (vehicle speeds of 40-50MPH), the exhaust then melts against the nearside also:

This is disappointing for two reasons, 1. This is what these vehicles are designed for, Defender 90's pulling around IW Livestock Trailers are a staple site of this country's landscape. 2. Dealer/LR seems to view delaying paying out for two mudflaps at £20 +vat each more important than the satisfaction of customer that has just spent £30k with them two months ago.

It appears the quality/stiffness of the rear mudflaps has been reduced over recent years, the same issue was never a problem with the old 2002 TD5 using the same trailer model.

I understand this is not a design changing issue (final year of production etc) but does Solihull have any advice on how this issue can be resolved?

Thanks

It is a very common issue. My NSR mudflap on the 110 has a very extensive chunk removed from it after Dragging the caravan to Eastnor and back. Speeds along the m5 were in the 55 - 65 region.

I'm looking to fit some cord / cable to retain the mudflap and stop it happening again.

Why are we revisiting this exact same issue again less than three weeks since you last posted on this albeit in a different topic? What did your dealer have to say about it?

Greeni: Haha, very good. Smile Joking a side these were max figures on the motorway empty usually not above 40mph on A roads, slower when loaded.

Just trying to show the worse possible situation it's been in, to tell you the truth they tucked themselves underneath at about 35mph on a B road the last time, it's ridiculous.

Devon-Rover: Yeah I understand it is now on the Puma's but only found this out when it was too late. I will probably tie them up and do the same when I have fitted new ones but don't think I should pay for these first replacements when using the vehicle as it's intended.

K9F: Unresolved hence post.

I am interested in this as it has happened to my Brother-in-Law's 110 & I am holding off towing with mine for this reason! Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

2015 110 XS UW sadly stolen 21/11/2017

I take it that those of you getting new flaps are still covered under warranty? Or are land rover honoring the fact that this is a towing vehicle and replacing all (surely not Shocked )

If im honest im not sure who is paying for mine the dealer or warranty, but since they sold me the car with the tow bar fitted its for them to sort out as that alone states its a towing vehicle.

The early ones had a stiffener inside the flap , surely its worth fitting something similar to prevent it happenning

Something like this

It happened on my first trip with a caravan on the back. I will be looking to add some sort of metal strip to prevent it happening again.
Im going to try and call in to the dealers this week and see what they say. I can't see much being done on a five year old truck however.
