Enlarging aperture where aerial cable goes behind dash
Hi

Replaced standard aerial with CB aerial. However, want to leave this in place permanently so planning to thread the cable behind dash through same opening used by standard aerial cable.

However, CB aerial cable already has connector soldered onto the end. This is quite a fat connector and I don't want to cut it off as I don't have a crimp tool to fit another one. So was wondering if I could increase the size of the aperture and use a grommet like this or will I risk water getting in behind the dash?

Bit risky i would say.

Is it a normal BNC connector? a new one can be bought from anywhere, even maplin and it is easily soldered on and will give a much better finish and sleep at night Wink William

Its a PL-259 plug, soldered on really well. I would have to cut it off really and get a new plug

Just means I cannot do the job today

Why make the job more difficult than it needs to be? I can't make out if the PL 259 is soldered or crimped but I'd de-solder / cut off the connector thread the co-ax where it needs to go then solder a new plug, if it means waiting for a few days then that's what I'd do. Steve.

Taken it under the bulkhead and into space under the drivers seat for now.

Will order another connector and do the job properly on another weekend

Thanks all for advice.

Patched in a little box of tricks that allows same antenna to be used for AM/FM radio as well as CB

PL 259 connectors are available as a clamp on option that will give excellent connectivity without the need for soldering or crimping and can be used again and again.

Thanks K9, was not worried about the solder, just didn't have a spare connector and my soldering iron ( 30W Antex) was not melting the solder on the existing one

I didn't know about the clamp on ones thought, since found out that Maplins sells them

Sorted out the job properly today. Pulled the old aerial cable through with a wire tied to end of it.

Pulled new Cb aerial cable back into the car using the wire.

Not so sure about the compression connector though. Have soldered the central bit but the cable seems to be held in place by the braiding being clamped
