Defender wont start, need help
Hi
One night my defender just cut out (thought i stalled) but when i went to start it again all you can hear is the starter motor spinning i think(my mechanical knowledge is quite little), i changed the lift pump today but still no luck. when i try to prime the fuel using the priming handle no fuel comes out of the bleed screw on the filter no matter how long i pump it for.
It's a new fuel filter on it and apparently the timing belt was done not long ago, I've only owned it for about 5 months.
Any ideas whats going on?

when you say all you can here is the starter spinning, do you mean the engine isn't turning over? and its literally just the starter motor? or is the engine turning just not firing? My 109 thread

Turn the ignition on. Get under the bonnet and pull the wire off the stop solenoid (on the back of the injection pump under the pipes), then touch the wire to the terminal on the solenoid, you should hear it click as you touch it. If not that may be a reason for it failing, solenoid has failed so no fuel to the engine.

Another way to check would be to crack off an injector pipe and crank it and see if any diesel comes out.

Are you getting power to the fuel solenoid?

Any immobiliser fitted? Working?

Theres no immobiliser fitted, i will check out the solenoid tomorrow.
How come i cant get any fuel out the bleed screw when i try to prime it though, thats not related to the solenoid is it?

What make of lift pump did you fit?

Does the manual lever on the lift pump feel as if it is doing anything? I think the engine needs to be in the correct place whilst trying to use lever. (So that the pump is not being compressed by camshaft). So if you have fitted new pump, and it is on high point of camshaft you won't be able to manual prime pump. You can prime using engine with bleed screw removed. Try this and see if you get fuel.

Any other issues before? Running ok?

The lift pump is bearmach, I think it must be on high point of camshaft, it felt like it was doing nothing.
Not had any running isues, well I did run out of fuel last week but I did about 60 miles since that so im not sure if that is related or not.

Doubt it would of helped and could well be related due to sucking rubish up the fuel intake.

As mentioned try bleeding, either with cam in different place, or with starter. Then if no fuel there start working your way back towards tank.

Has new fuel filter got any diesel in it? Are you happy it's fitted correctly, so not allowing air to be sucked in?

Was the new fuel filter before or after the running out of fuel?

I changed the fuel filter after i ran out of fuel, did it the same time as i changed the lift pump, filled it up with diesel first aswell
