not wanting to open a can of worms......

I've found that while driving all can seem ok but for whatever reason when changing gear due to a lack of responsiveness to throttle imputs changing gear smoothly can seem almost impossible.......and to me give the impression of drive train slack.

no idea what the answer is etc just food for thought.

But that is only a problem if you have "a lack of responsiveness to throttle inputs", a feature which fortunately was omitted from most TDCi Defenders (tragically your vehicle seems to have more than its fair share of optional defects).

It must be said that changing gear smoothly in a Puma is not always easy!

As to knowing how to handle the transmission, well, if there is one person who changes gears here with respect, it is probably me.

I actually though you would. Wink

Let us know what th outcome is when the truck is back from the dealer. Thumbs Up

Truck not back from the dealer yet, but they just called me to inform that they found the cause of the transmission clunk. Play in the teeth of both rear half shafts. New ones ordered and they should be installed tomorrow, done under the extended warranty, so it has been worth to take that.
Will kepos if clunk is really gone after I get the truck back.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I have found the best way to lose all the free play in the driveline is to replace the centre differential in the transfer box with an automatic torque biased ATB diff. Ashcroft can supply these. I have fitted these diffs to Puma Defenders with Automatic gearbox conversions that have real issues and it transforms them. Gives the car much better traction all of the time as well.

Truck is back since last night. Two new halfshafts, plus other parts.... Clunk is gone now, and everything feels generally much tighter, including the gearbox changes. At least that is my impression after the 15km drive home....
Cost got all covered without a problem or delay by LR Swiss extended warranty (which believe is not some 3rd party insurance company here, but LR themselves). Dealer showed me the invoice that they will send to LR for this job. Shocked Shocked
