What an excellent post, months suffering from that noise, and the solution so close and simple. I am these days in charge of eliminating many small but unbearable noises. thank you Β‘ Thumbs Up

I did my job today, as you said, it was very easy to disassemble, but I found the weights very firm, without loose movements... I found some white grease, it is possible that more grease is needed, do you have any idea what kind of grease should be added? Thank you very much. and it is true, I had a little more work to place the cover but nothing impossible.

I did this repair over the weekend and have cured the rattle in 5th and 6th while on the Motorway, not tested it in low range yet. My son thought we had broken the gearbox due to the racket coming from the weights in low range.

I tried refitting the rubber gaiter with bicycle tyre levers but couldn't.

I would recommend the carpet removal and pulling the rubber gaiter and then carpet over the gear lever before refitting this only needed 10 minutes in total as opposed to the 30 minutes wasted trying to pull the gaiter back up, not to mention the skin I've lost from my fingers. Big Cry

You can do it that way too yes, only some people with matting or carpet with sill protectors etc might find it even more work to take the matting out.

But yes. The ideal time to do it is with matting or carpet out.
That also includes being the ideal time to fit a Shift R or Slickshift and grease up plus spacers fitting if anyone wanted to go that route. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. β›½οΈπŸ›’οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§πŸ§°βš™οΈ RED, WHITE & BOOST! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

The TD5 has an entirely different gear lever, so unfortunately this procedure won't help you.

Perhaps some fixings are loose on the TD5? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. β›½οΈπŸ›’οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§πŸ§°βš™οΈ RED, WHITE & BOOST! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
