My 5 pence here. I have the Kaymar installed and quality is absolute top. Disadvantage is that opening the rear door is a two stage process. When I bought and installed the Kaymar I had never heard of Nakatanenga (or this forum) yet, decision was based on guidance from the aulro forum where many have the Kaymar.
If I were to repeat this, it is clear that the Nakatanenga single pivot would by my choice. Quality is on level playing ground with the Kaymar, there is no drilling in the rear of the truck (same as the Kaymar), but the big advantage is that the rear door opening becomes just a one stage process. The price of the Nakatanenga for the delivered quality is extremely sharp in my opinion. A friend of mine here has the Nakatanenga installed on his new truck, so I see the quality first hand. I think price/quality Nakatanenga is way above all the others, even in a league of its own.
Here some may have different opinions, but for me very important is that both the Kaymar and the Nakatanenga leave the spare wheel in exactly the same position as original. So if you don't have blackened windows, you can still use your cabin rear view mirror.
In first instance, prior to buying the Kaymar, I had bought a different one from a well known UK aftermarket producer (requires drilling in the rear panel), but when I received it, I was not convinced at all, did not install it, and moved to the Kaymar.

I need to fit a carrier to my new DC, but looking through this thread it appears that the only carrier suitable for a tailgate that is mounted solely to the cross member is the Sonic one? Is this correct?

The last one I had on my old DC was a royal pain to fit as the top mounting needed to be reinforced as the bodywork flexed dreadfully, so I don't want to go down this road again... I don't believe the bodywork is the place to mount anything this weighty.

Apart from being hard to find either new or used, the sonic one is a ridiculously expensive solution for merely transporting a spare wheel... I'm positive the near-identical style carriers you see mounted to almost every Toyota and 'backie' in Africa don't cost that much!!

But are there any other options?

With any of the two stage opening of wheel carriers, I.e. You have to unfasten them from the outside, my understanding is that they are illegal to fit to vehicles if the rear door is used for passengers.

Basically passengers from the rear compartment have to be able to exit without any external assistance.

Yes safari equip do one for drop tailgates, it uses one of the tailgate latches, the swings out to one side, so you can drop tailgate.

Thanks Andy, but those both require mounting to the bodywork... Safari Equip do make a single pivot/single mount but that is for stationwagons, similarly it would appear, is the Natakanenga. I think the Kaymar might work like the sonic one, but at over £1k it's bonkers money... I'd rather stick the spare on the back seats!

Brendan, you may well have a point there. Even if at its first inspection when the SVX turned 4 years old our local tech inspection did not say anything about my Kaymar (they may have just missed it).....
The good thing is that if at future tests they would ever make this remark, my Kaymar can easily be removed without leaving any marks (i.e. holes), and then replaced by a Nakatanenga.
Next tech control is when the truck turns 7 years old.

To the best of my knowledge the Extreme 4x4 ones are made by Safari Equip who are located 2 miles away from us.



The new Nakatanenga wheel carrier is a 100% stainless steel one except for the actual wheel studs. The wheel studs are a fine pitch stud so stainless steel in this application is not the best material for this application.

no more ball bearings but something special bushes, no grease needed.

NAS step compliable

Interesting, So will it be fully compatible with existing holes and without drilling in a Puma 110 Station Wagon? (like my SVX 2.4 Tdci model year 2009)

Strength of this new SS version will be equal to the current version? Or even better?
