I think in general all snorkels have some effect on power! It should be worth noting though that the Mantec is a Raised Air Intake rather than a snorkel, so a Safari Snorkel may be your best bet

It may have an influence on power, however not as much of an influence as an air box full of water...

Exactly my thinking!! I don't really wade but it's just a precaution, feel very nervous since my incident. Snorkeld my old 200tdi after a similar incident!! But I simply ran a pipe up a cvheap metal mushroom top from rebel. Yeah that's what I read about mantec although I confess to liking the look not mention price!! But loosing 10hp as b.a.s showed on his dyno is a fair bit to drop. Fingers crossed safari isn't quite as bad!!

Just as a side note does anyone have experiance with the safari style from direct 4x4. I know safari genuine will be stronger but how strong do they need to be??

I have the safari copy fitted. Seems to be pretty solid.
Had to enlarge the bolt holes on the wing. Other than that an easy fit. Siliconed all my hoses and drain holes. Later opened the drain on air box for rain water knowing I will never go that deep. If I stick a poly bag over the head of the snorkel engines dies almost instantly. So it must be well sealed. I did find and have found on other TD5's that the air intake connections inside the wing are loose and lower than the height on the wing. |

There was certainly no noticeable power drop when I fitted a safari snorkel to my td5 90. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Just to update, the safari snorkel on my 90 ends affect low down power and anti stall. Bum. Now I have a deeper problem, my snorkel was a safari copy that was a gift from the family including one extremely landrover obsessed 4 year old and I can't really remove it lol. Honestly it would be an easier decision to remove a testy than see his face after I remove his present to me and my landy. So question is- can I just drill the air box to gain performance?? I'm honestly never going to wade anywhere near bonnet deep so it should be perfectly fine from water. A bit of a strange one I know but does anyone have any thoughts on this or anyone even tried this??

Drilling holes would be a bad idea - you would have to drill quite a few and to quite a size to get any appreciable airflow and then that air will be coming from inside a warm/hot engine bay which will not do any favours to that missing power you are looking for. What exactly are the issues you are experiencing with the snorkel? If you can't live with them then I'd just man up and sit your 4 year old down and explain some simple fluid dynamics. Maybe even draw him a picture

Love the simple diagram
I had a genuine safari on my first td5 and noticed no difference. It might be worth seeing if the top is smaller on yours as maybe you can get a genuine safari top or make up a bigger one? Worth a go and saves messing the whole instillation up with holes . Defender puma dormobile camper |

Hmm lots to think about. I will try again tomorrow and see if I can live with the poor anti stall and sluggish when cold behaviour. Just as a point I found my safari knock off to have a wider diameter pipe than the original

As above^^^ might be worth unplugging the MAF and driving about for a couple of days to see if it cures some of your problems

Hmmm, I did recently replace maf with genuine to try cure an odd starting issue, which it didn't. I'm really beginning to think the maf is better disconnected. Actually it was new before some moisture got into the airbnox, would a small amount of moisture damage a maf??
