Tommo Member Since: 19 Dec 2013 Location: Leicestershire Posts: 830	which oil? I am considering servicing my defender rather than use a dealer / garage. However, doing some research on what oils, particularly engine oil, it is a bit confusing as some people are advocating 5w/30 semi synthetic whilst others say fully synthetic...which is it? BTW I will use genuine filters and will service every year or 12k. any advice welcome.

Tommo Member Since: 19 Dec 2013 Location: Leicestershire Posts: 830	6k! the service portfolio I got with the defender says 12k for the td5 or 12 months. I guess if I could afford it then every 6k but it will not have hard use (not all the time anyway ) so 12k it is.

Any good quality 5w30 oil will suffice - fully synthetic is the better choice. My TD5 was serviced by a dealer and I would like to buy some for top ups. Therefore does it matter which one I buy ? The reason behind this is that I seem to remember with motorbikes a few years ago it was considered a no no to mix synthetics with minerals etc. Cheers

Tommo, if it is any use to you, we have been using Defenders and Cruisers sine 1972 in both military and mining applications and i can tell you that the best results we always had has been with Amsoil - hands down the best results of every oil we have ever used. For Defenders use the OEM LR filters and Amsoil 5W30 Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine oil - for cold climates use 0W20. And no, you do not want to mix synthetic with natural oil - bad idea. ****CENSORED****
