which oil?
I am considering servicing my defender rather than use a dealer / garage. However, doing some research on what oils, particularly engine oil, it is a bit confusing as some people are advocating 5w/30 semi synthetic whilst others say fully synthetic...which is it?
BTW I will use genuine filters and will service every year or 12k.
any advice welcome.

Shocked 6k!
the service portfolio I got with the defender says 12k for the td5 or 12 months.
I guess if I could afford it then every 6k but it will not have hard use (not all the time anyway Wink ) so 12k it is.

Any A1, B1 semi or fully synthetic 5W30 or 5W40. If changing at 6000 miles use semi, if changing at 12,000 miles fully synthetic is better.

Also - change both oil filters... I never see the point in just changing one!

Any good quality 5w30 oil will suffice - fully synthetic is the better choice.

Thanks all for advice.
Going to go for fully synthetic oil (probably Castrol Magnetic) and buy genuine service kit from somewhere such as Duckhams.
Porny- the service kit does contain both filters Very Happy

Hi all,
Quick question - can you mix synthetic and semi synthetic oils. My TD5 was serviced by a dealer and I would like to buy some for top ups. Therefore does it matter which one I buy ?

The reason behind this is that I seem to remember with motorbikes a few years ago it was considered a no no to mix synthetics with minerals etc.

Cheers

Tommo, if it is any use to you, we have been using Defenders and Cruisers sine 1972 in both military and mining applications and i can tell you that the best results we always had has been with Amsoil - hands down the best results of every oil we have ever used.

For Defenders use the OEM LR filters and Amsoil 5W30 Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine oil - for cold climates use 0W20.

And no, you do not want to mix synthetic with natural oil - bad idea. ****CENSORED****

Unipart do a 20ltr 5w30 fully synthetic A5/B5 for about £48 plus VAT. (Fuch oil as far as I know).

I've used for circa 5 years on D3 and Defender.
