Does the service light have to be reset by the dealer ? Lots of cars have a sequence for resetting service indicators i.e Ford cars is something like depress both brake and clutch pedals turn on ignition keep both pedals depressed for 20 seconds with ign on the turn ign off release both pedals and turn ign on and voila service light is reset ! and the dealer will charge you forty quid for that !!!
Might be worth a web search or you tube search before going to the dealer. 2005 Td5 90 XS

The second one works for the Feeelander 2's, and IIRC Discovery 3's. Not sure about the Defender though! An engine to TDi for!

This morning the OIL SERVICE LIGHT was not on when I started the engine but I had booked into Roger Youngs for them to reset it anyway so off I went.

On arrival I explained the stop start running and low mileage from the last oil change and the fact that this morning it was no longer showing the OIL SERVICE WARNING.

The service manager asked if i had done any longish runs prior to the OIL SERVICE WARNING light no illuminating.

Funny old thing (I did a quick blast to Exeter last night probably about 25 miles of dual carriageway).

Anyway the service manager told me that the OIL SERVICE WARNING LIGHT will illuminate prior to the ecu requesting a DPF Regen.. if the regen is not completed i.e. stop start running it will stay illuminated until it has completed the regen.

They did a fault read and it had registered the OIL SERVICE WARNING, so they duly reset it for me, washed the vehicle and it cost me sweet FA.

Top service from Roger Youngs yet again. You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

OK.

Tried them both.

The transit method is clearly far more simple. Not sure what that says about the imtended drivers of said vehicle or maybe the engineers behind it! In any event it did not work on my Defender.

The second method did not work either; however, I did notice that after repeadedly turning on the ignition to try the first method the service message has now disappeared. I think this may only be temporary, due to so many ignition ons in a short period of time, so I'll try again later.

Also, I didn't realise that just pressing the trip reset before inserting the ignition key fires up the trip and odo recorders for maybe 10 seconds. Makes sense allowing to check the mileage on vehicles without needing the keys.

Finally, I noticed that on turning the ignition on but not starting the vehicle, after the service indicator goes out, and the the screen turns to the normal odo and trip recorders, the red oil lamp starts to flash on and off. I'm assuming this is linked to the service indicator.

Update - well it's several days after I tried the resets and I can confirm that the oil service indicator has not appeared again. I'm not certain now what the trick was but I think it may have been holding down the trip reset button before turning on the ignition and then turning on the ignition with the button still held down. I counted to 10 before releasing the button; but the reset may even be less than that.

Would be interested to see if anyone else can replicate this.

Just tried the 2.2 TDCI Ford Transit reset method and it worked first time Thumbs Up

Ignition on......pressed both brake and accelerator pedal down for 15 seconds.... Oil light started to flash. Turned the ignition off and left it for around 2 mins. Went back to the car and no more oil service indicator.

The best method is the Philips head screwdriver method.

Point the screwdriver in the direction of the oil service light. When everything is really well lined up you simply strike the back of the screwdriver handle firmly with a 22 oz hammer.

Works every time! ****CENSORED****

but I have known some dealers who don't even have the sophistication for the screwdriver, all they have is the hammer! ****CENSORED****
