Corrosion fix - ideas welcome.
Hi, I'm after some thoughts on an overdue fix for a corrosion issue on my double cab, and I'd appreciate any pointers.

I have several small corrosion holes in the rear seat box around where the rear seat mounting brackets are. The photo isn't great (taken from the rear wheel arch), but if you poke through the holes it's the carpet that you prod (explains the damp carpets....!)

My current solution is to undo (..??!) the seat mounting bolts and slide some thin aluminium sheet (1.5 or 2mm thick) in to cover the holes and then seal/ rivet before clamping back up with the seat mounting bolts.

Does this seem reasonable?
Would there be enough room between the seat box and mounts to slide some aluminium sheet in?
Should I plate it from the inside or outside?

I'm going to back up the repair by making an interior wheel arch mud flap.

Any thoughts appreciated! Many thanks.

Cheers

Rob

For sealing, I suggest Sikaflex. I've used it on my Defender to seal many areas of leaks, great stuff...

...other suppliers are available..Wink

i have a cunning plan to seal some holes in the rear tub of my 110 where I've removed the old seat belt mounts in a similar fashion, so I think it sounds ok. In your case, I'd try and treat the corrosion as best you can first, but once sealed in with Sikaflex or similar it shouldn't get any worse. I'd plate and seal from the outside to prevent any further exposure to water and then coat the seat mounting bolts with Duralac to prevent further bi-metallic corrosion. Darren

Thanks for the input. I'll use some sikaflex as a sealant/adhesive.
I reckon on getting some new mounting bolts; I'm not optimistic that the old ones will be easy to remove!
