I think Ashcrofts were, at some point looking at a Puma 6 speed to TD5 conversion. Not sure if it ever happened. Maybe worth giving them a buzz? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Failing that, unless it's already got one, a 1.2:1 transfer box will increase the leg length a bit.
I've got one in my (Td5) 110, made a huge difference. |

Or go for a Ashcroft transmissions 1:1 Transfer box?

Generally speaking the preferred option to improve a TD5's road performance is to fit the 1.2 transfer box and get a decent engine map.

I agree with the 1.2 box- but depends on what your desired choice in tyre size is. Anything less than 33s (265/75/16) and you will still be sat at 2500-2600rpm at 70. Going from my Puma Defender to the gf's Discovery Td5 I feel like I am revving the t***s off it when on the motorway at 65mph.
1.2 box is so popular because there are hundreds of them floating around from broken Discoverys (normally fetch about £100) where the 1:1 box will need to be bought from somewhere like Ashcrofts (£550). Couple of hours work..... just need to disconnect drive shafts, disconnect linkage unbolt from the gearbox and then do the same in reverse to fit

I believe that the 6 speed MT85 out of Aston martins/corvettes etc can be made to fit, read somewhere that a guy in America fitted one to a range rover classic so, similar transfer box with an adaptor plate?

just looked and used the Ashcroft ratio calculator the MT85 only drops the 70mph RPM by ~ 100RPM 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

yeah, a 1.2 box is the way to go.
It's really a fuel saver and ear saver on a long trip. epsecially when you are doing 110 to 120km/h, you'll appreciate it. the lt230 is the same fitting, so you don't need to worry about it not matching. so it's a 1.41 box out drop it and drop in the 1.222 and you're done. it's purely a mechanical exercise, physically. do bear in mind, if you had cruise control via the ecu, it will now only work in gear 4. so a 'speedo healer' can be fitted or you can get a cruise control kit. pulling away in gear 2 might not be so easy now, if you are used to that. but anything on a slight decline slope, you'll pull away great in 2 and make good acceleration. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At �125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island. |

That's because the 6speed box is fitted with the 1.2 transfer box. Just fitting the 6 speed box with 1.4 transfer box would make hardly any difference. The gain from the 6 speed is still having a low 1st gear. 1.2 transfer box on a tdi or td5 isn't great for setting off fully laden or towing. |

I believe the MT85 is different to the MT82 fitted to the puma
