I remember snapping an old CJ in half a few years back while off roading
 It was incredibly rusty though! An engine to TDi for!

Jeep Wrangler mechanical wise but I'm not a fan of that either. Prefer a shogun to that but they all aren't sensible alternatives IMO, a disco is another option but price is a massive factor. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

Jeep Wranglers is what I meant (but they are all autos now

^^^^ x2. G wagon is it, although you may have trouble finding a SWB 463 these days, as they' scaling production down of them (might even have stopped... although this could just be the cabrio version, I'll check on the G forums I'm on)
But as Mark says, these are the only real competition to a 90... coil springs, decent axle travel, an axle difflocks. plus you can have a factory auto and it won't let rain in when it rains. I used to have a shogun 4work van for work. was OK. nice on the road, towed well, naff axle travel, and you only get the traction control on the posh versions, not the 4work (which ironically is "designed" for farmers & builders....) If defender came in auto id buy one in a flash.
The current jeep wrangler has much more power than defender. Comes with proper tyres. But isn't close because it can't tow it's shadow. There's only one car that's even close to a 90 a D4. All the others can be only compared to a freelander. |

Wot 4? Presumably not towing or carrying, otherwise youd be considering LWB. For off-roading Id recommend keeping an old one going For looking flash, its GOT to be the Jeep. Peter |

A good friend of mine used to run one of the original Niva's back in the 80's and 90's. think it was a 1.6 petrol. he had a set of 6.50x16 Firestone SATs on it, and that was it. that thing went everywhere. was comfy inside, had a cracking heater! would fit places my 90 wouldn't go, but wouldn't keep up at speed on the rough stuff like my 90 would. |
