I'm thinking there's plenty of you on here making a reasonable living for yourselves (and perhaps considerably more than what I'd call reasonable
![]() anyhow after having done various jobs in the past largely related to electrics and buildings but mostly office based (design and consultancy) I feel I need to move onto something new. I've been self employed in the past and if I'm honest I think thats where I want to be... I also enjoy being out and about and problem solving. I just feel I need to do something fresh. don't mind working hard but its the stress that I'd like to try and minimise - your thoughts would be much appreciated. (.....don't mention fault finding on defenders ![]() |

Caterham,
You and me both. I am not self employed but find the five months of constant nights I am expecting to work in the Summer months coupled together with more and more 'expectations' with no recompense is seriosly impinging on my quality of life and well-being. I too am looking for 'horizons new' and am avidly seeking a new electrical/electronic engineering based role. I am fortunate enough not to have to 'work to live' due to my military pension, however I do need to do something. Basic criteria for me.....Better quality of family life, no prolonged shiftwork, limited stress and adequate recompense for going the extra mile. A recent interview involved a salary £5k less than my current one. 10 minutes from the house instead of 40 miles one way. Overtime payments which I currently get none but TOIL and perhaps most important an ethos of caring for their employees and actively encouraging advancement and development. If offered I'll bite their arm off as it's a no brainer. I wish you luck and good fortune in your quest and hope I receive some of the same....... ![]() ![]() ![]() Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

thanks Mal.
like you say quality of life is most certainly worth a few quid, and besides I need the extra time to find the rest of the 'problem' with my car. ![]() and I most certainly wish you good luck in your quest. if they do offer you the job i'd recommend you leave their arm in tact - it may not go down well on the first day ![]() |

I find that as time progresses your priorities change significantly. Top of my list is now quality of life followed by an employer that 'invests in it's own people' namely their own workforce.
Having had 32 years in the military with it's associated nomadic lifestyle, ducking and diving on all continents I've had all the excitement I can muster. I wish to become a fully fledged Dorset Hobbit. I've already got the hairy feet..... ![]() ![]() .....and rarely venture out of 'The Shire!' If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Whatever you do don't start working with family even if you have a great relationship beforehand it will wither and die before you can stop it. I know that I am jaded by my own experience but don't make the same mistake I have.
On a more positive note have a look at the local collage and the courses they run. It is never too late to retrain. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon. |

like you say quality of life - just wish I'd realised it sooner. thanks for the replies. I can in theory very easily get my Part P cert for doing domestic electrical work and the idea of becoming an odd job man really appeals ?? |

I too am fed up with working 50 hours a week and two weekends every month but once you get on that tread mill it is so hard to get off again.
And to think I had the dream life in Spain living up a mountain, self employed working 20 hours a week and living the dream only a few years ago. What did I do? Give it all up and come back to England to help out and work with the family but it was a disaster and I now work else where. Follow your dream and don't let anyone stop you. What's the saying - ONE LIFE - LIVE IT |

smilesapart. like you once on its hard to jump off.
2 days a week sounds like a dream but realistically I think for one second I could survive on two days a week so before I know it I'd be back to square 1. once again thanks for the replies ....I'm still thinking |

I too am looking for pastures new. Sick of working at my employers beck and call pretty much, I never quite know when I will start on a given day or what time I will finish. Regular weekend work and unsociable hours, all for flat money pretty much. Social life is non existent, I literally have to book holiday if I want to do anything. I'm seriously thinking of going back on powerlines but they don't seem to be recruiting in our area.
