Parking fees are also relatively reasonable in the market towns in the Harrogate District (Harrogate Borough Council), shame same can't be said for Harrogate town centre mind...
In Knaresborough we get 20 mins free in the market place, but it is much smaller area than Thirsk, so needs to maintain a turnover of cars... Even so I find 20 mins enough to get a few bits in local shops when I'm on my way home from work or whatever. For 60p I can get an hour in the car park just outside the market place, or 2 hours for a quid. Not as good as Thirsk, but not too bad! Ripon also has a car park in the city centre which is only 2 for up to 24 hours... bargain! So yes, there are some good things out there! I love a bit of positivity for a change ! A lesson in how to revitalise the great British high street.Well done to them to realise that shops need customers to be able to pay their business rates ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

Too true about revitalising the high street.. Local town where we could spend more time and money on the high street we do not due to parking charges! So two less customers on the high street due to Calderdale council! Interesting there are brand new shops there which have never been occupied for about last 8 years at least!
In Bradford, close to us is a business park where we know the co-owners. A good unit is vacant there and has been vacant for a while. Yes we could afford the rent. NO we can not afford the business rates. The owner states that what stifles their ability to rent it is the business rates! Brendan |

Oh, and I forgot to mention free disc parking for up to 2 hours ... on the High Street and some surrounding streets in Knaresborough... and parts of all the other towns in our Council area.
Dunno how many other areas have disc parking these days. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/ Yorkshire Off Road Club - http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net |

Very sensible! In my local town, most of the car parks are 50p for 2 hours, and are free after 3 PM. An engine to TDi for!

Winchester 1.30 an hour . There are 6 bays that are free for 30 mins or park and ride for 3 for the day ( up to 7 people ) or 2.50 if after 10am .
Ironically we live on a bus route but it is cheaper to drive to the park and ride bus stop which then comes back past our house. Way to go to save the environment |

I dislike Leeds for parkin as they are determined to heard you into multistorey parking which is fine but I don't fit under the barriers. So las time I had to park on the street it was something in the region of 5.20 for an hour. Now I'm sure that the locals will know of cheaper but it kinda makes normal folk keep away. Problem I have in Cambridge is fitting in any of the car parks. Even the park and ride is too low. Are there any car parks without height restrictions?

I never go to Brighton (11 miles away) because of multistories.
Even the outdoor carparks have low goalposts. |
