I run my 300tdi on 10W40 Semi Synth (Fuchs Titan) and it seems fine as well as this is what is listed in the manual so should be ok. I think dropping to a 5W30 is ok too and may improve mpg etc.

10W40 Part Synthetic.

Can go for the most expensive magnitech but its equally as happy on the cheap halfruads stuff.

Before you change give it a run with a tin of engine flush in it till it’s warm, then drop the old oil while it’s still a bit warm (it will look like a mix of oil and coal dust which is normal) remember to replace the sump sealing washer and oil filter then refill with new oil.

Up to you but I always add in a tin of Wynns oil treatment when I change as I feel it makes a difference to my engine's running but again, up to you.

I think Halfords are running an offer where all their oil is £10.

I recommend fitting a Drainplug to replace your sump plug, makes draining the oil so much easier. I got mine form Difflock...

My 300TDi was filled with Magnatec by the main dealer at the initial 1K mile service and I have used the same stuff every 6-months since.
They also stripped the drain-plug at said service so I fitted a Difflock Drainplug the next time (wasn't letting them near it again) and it has worked fine for all these years. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Whatever costco are flogging! Big drum (20l or so) for the price of one bottle from usual shops. Think it's 10w40

Being a tdi, it will probably run on anything.

I just use 10w/40 or 15w/40 semi-synthetic - whatever I can get hold of cheapest at the time.

If you look in the handbook it actually tells you what fluids to put in and when Wink

I popped into Halfords this morning as I needed a few bits and had a look at this oil. It is not their usual oil that is on sale, it is a 'special purchase' product. It is in 4L containers rather than their usual 5L and seems to be a cheap generic oil (petrol or diesel). The Halfords 10W40 turbo diesel specific oil is £17.99 for 5L.

I think I will stick with Fuchs Titan which I can get for about £18 for 5L from Opie as that is good quality stuff and not much more than Halfords.

Thank you all for your advice, one more question. I have 10ltrs of 15W40 multi purpose oil would this be ok to use? or do I need to buy some semi-synthetic oil?

David.

Personally I would stick to a decent 10W40 rather than use up the stuff you already have, however tempting it is to save cash. However that is just me 'like things to be right' rather than a technical expert opinion.

I think your right, decent 10W40 it is then, but it was worth asking.
