norman - you must forgive miserableolgit; he was not bragging about his trousers he was apologising for the fact that his man-servant doesn't carry around his car keys like most of the other XS drivers do. Its a pity tha land rover doesn't utilises its keyless start on the defender range - both mog and myself would pay a considerable extra sum to have that option rather than use common mechanical technology ![]() |

No unnecessary quote used in this instance.
![]() My manservant and I are amused ![]() Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

On the subject of keys, does anybody have any experience of Freelander 2 key fobs? They charge while the cars being driven but once the battery's dead the remote needs replacing at £250!!!!! The Range Rover fob looks the same but the battery is replaceable anyone know if its possible to replace it with this (obviously will need the ECU reprogramming)?

Yes, I have the Remote Key version and it does exactly what it says it does. Easy to install and start using. The range is pretty hopeless though, so no improvement on the original fob. Some users report problems with an immobiliser if you have a steering column guard like the X-eng Column Lock so check first if you have one fitted. I wish it was a folding key but at least with the Remote Key device it is one less item on the key ring. I'm pleased I got it. |

This probably won’t help the OP, but for those of us with old LRs, I have plans to fit one of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360394021851?ssP...1438.l2649 to my rebuild, and have the key cut to match the new ignition barrel I bought. However, this will only work a (pre-electronic) 200/300-era Defender, as the receiver for the key is built in to the alarm control box. I wouldn’t like to undertake the challenge of persuading something like that to work on a Tdci or even a Td5! As a bonus, it will give my drive-by-bike-cable era truck such creature comforts as central locking, and an ‘immobiliser’. The fob itself isn’t quite an ‘OE’ look, but not too bad. There’s a boot release button the fob. On the face of it, this is redundant: the ‘boot’ of a defender takes the form of a door (and will therefore be opened with the rest of the doors via an additional solenoid). Instead, I’ll wire this up to the rear worklights so I can have these come on remotely. Pretty sad/cool (delete as appropriate). Real trucks don't have spark plugs |

For Pumas, doesn't the all-in-one key make operating the light switch more of a pain? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I heard that being called a kind of "hardware version" of the light-reminder-buzzer when you turn of the car. |

Can't say I've ever noticed this... It isn't actually that much bigger than the later standard Puma Key. Liking your style. Hope it comes good. It'll probably work better than the Remote Key one I bought as it won't need 400 lb/sq.in pressure to click the button, and almost certainly have a range better than up-against-the-window before it triggers the central locking! Also, my Remote Key comes apart every couple of days as it is less robust than a deck of stacked cards ![]() ![]() |
