there are some very interesting theories here being discussed however there are more obvious considerations thats should be discussed in my opion.

clearly there are potential issues with pressure most notably negative pressure at c0.2m from the leading edge of the snorkel terminal. but all these calculations need to be considered against the engine being turbo charged and not naturally aspirated. further more I would suggest the use of a snorkel pressure boost fan (similar to what's used on a boiler flue with excessive resistance).

What gets me about this debate is where the OE air intake is - on the side of the vehicle - which while the brick like shape of the front is bound to have a bow wave effect on the air at certain speeds, at other speeds the side vent probably works in a bit of a vacuum. At least a forward facing snorkel has a stream of air that increases with road speed. I wonder whether this has more to do with the 'suck' of the turbo and inlet vacuum than the air flow/pressure presented to the snorkel/vent.

The friction resistance/pipe length thing has a small effect I'm sure - i'm personally not convinced it is much - just think of how much suction/flow you can get on a long thinner hoover pipe - my inbuilt system in my house has something like 15 or 20 meters of 50mm pipe from motor to pipe end.
