Caterham, as you may have realised and without offence being caused what so ever. you have driven it like a fairy and it seems to get clogged up of which doesit no good what so ever Mr. Green

Get it hot on the motor way and give it this in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th oncein a while and it will free it up and keep the crid away Thumbs Up

Or bring it to me for a few hrs and ill free it up on the dyno no problem Razz

however I don't believe much more than 2250 rpm for 95% of the time is necessary quote]

Where do you think peak torque is ??? Only reving it to this rpm is waisting power and wont help overall with the driving experience.

Pottering about at low revs will let the vehicle run more egr than a high revs drive for sure.

JLR have been using Ford engines for a while.

well despite using decent fuel, 2so, lots of Italian tune-ups, towing etc mine still has that tappety rattle on accelleration which has been there for 2 years now since I drove it home from the dealer. Trouble is it goes well, mpg is good and I'm beginning to think I should just leave it alone.

However we're on hols in Malvern again in July so its going into James French in Oxford for a proper checkup. I wish BAS and Alive weren't so far North ! Hopefully its just timing slightly out rather than a faulty injector. I can't see how it could be the latter as it goes so well

Caterham just for a week drive like it like a knacker (the preferred term for pikey here) and see if it clears out the cobwebs !

forgive me....

my wife knows only too well that I don't listen to good sound advice.......

that said I still believe alot of my problems (too low revs) is the result of the my other problems and not the other way round.

granted 2250 rpm might be a little low but I did suggest only for 95% of the time. I've seen my revs going up to best part of 3000 rpm without trying even trying recently while things have been running smoothly (especially in 1st / 2nd gear) and no matter what I won't be convinced that reving the engine beyond this regularly is advantageous ( Very Happy ).

so if only things were running smoothly all the time the engine would be breathing better but alais something is clearly not quite right and I'm still not sure if its the engine or transmission.

Crying or Very sad

(the only down side of the engine / transmission running smoothly is a reduced mpg but I'm more than happy to put up with that.)

the clatter I've referred to in the past - if that was injecter clatter is it possible this could change from day to day - I guess not?

I no I've been told otherwise but I'm still convinced the egr is causing a problem - sometimes I can be running along very smoothly at low revs (possibly too) low and other times under very similar circumstances there's a serious clatter sort of sound?

the other thing is turn off and starting the engine. sometimes the engine stops smoothly with a wobble and other times its more a clunking sort of noise?

starting is sometimes really eager and smother yet other times its considerably less so (I always wait for the glow plugs to go out)

Confused

the only thing I'd swap it for would be a cheap run about and an other Caterham but I'm not sure the wife wouldn't kill me.

Shocked

+1 , it does seem you have had a lot of hassle with this car and I wonder if this particular defender is not what you need in your file any more.

Again without wishing to cause offence if you're not wishing to embrace information shared from those 'in the know' why not stop 'bleating' on in an open forum? Effectively it's just a spleen vent for your own benefit. There is just no helping some people!

K9F is that an EGR and is it off a Defender ? And how on earth would it get that clogged up? How old is it ? Sure looks like a bad case Shocked

Hi Rossy,

It's a picture from Dgardel's album. Shocked Shocked me when I saw it!

Maybe he could enlighten us. He, (as I will be soon) is running an EGR shut remap so it'll be immaterial. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Bow down Someone had to say it Bow down

Caterham old chap, the convoluted machinations regarding your Defender are seemingly endless. Cakey is right but his suggestion that your Defender is probably not the vehicle for you has been made before, more than once Rolling Eyes

Use it until something goes bang and get it fixed under warranty or ditch it ....but that has been suggested before ...more than once too Banging Head Steve.

sorry guys ..... (and gals) didn't mean to ignore you (you're probably hoping I was Very Happy )...

this email slipped under the radar.

Shocked that is one well dirty egr (I've got some calapsable shovels for sale if anyone is interested might be ideal for cleaning that out)

so it would appear I've been very wrong on various items and the egr being one - all beit very primative tests I'm confident the egr is working just fine. with / without a blanking plate fitted my 'issue' is still there. I can hear the chucka chucka sound and when reving the engine I can hear what sounds like the egr opening / closing?

After having the turbo replaced and having done a few hundred miles I'm actually sure there is nothing what so ever wrong with the engine. The clatter is still there on / off but I believe its the transmission. Hopefully it can't be another dodgy gearbox to transfer box extension shaft but knowing who fitted it I wouldn't be suprised. I'm starting with replacing the transmission fluids and see where that takes me.

......may be this isn't the car for me........especially if how it is is normal. only problem is with all the issues I've had I don't feel I've had the opportunity to make a fair choice?

ah well onwards and upwards.

once again sorry for missing this post previously - hope you weren't thinking I'd 'got the hump and was ignoring your comments' Very Happy Thumbs Up

as you may have guessed I'm a bit thick and things don't sink in very quickly.....so you need to mention things more than once....more than 6 or 7 times at least.
