Faulty temperature gauge and loss of power
In Morocco heading to Casablanca then up to France.

Engine runs fine, it's not over heating but the temp gauge shoots up to max and as it does the engine splutters and looses power.

The gauge then drops after a few seconds and normal service is resumed.

Any ideas? Just waiting to talk to Land Rover in Casablanca

Checked system with Nanocom no faults registered.

Check the relays under the (you are from UK) driver seat (the first if you haven't the ABS, the second otherwise) and the battery connections Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Isn't this also related to a poor earth connection to the ECU casing?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The ECU is losing power (I'm assuming TD5). The temperature gauge is modified by the ECU to read correctly (inverted and adjusted) so when the ECU loses power the gauge just uses the signal from the sender so it normally goes over to full deflection. Obviously an ECU with no power will also cause the engine to die.

The main causes of this are the main relay (bad connection or bad relay), battery connections, earth connections. The main relay supplies power to the ECU when the ignition is turned on so that's always the first thing to check as it may have come loose in it's base. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Checked all the relays there were a few loose. After the 10 days through the dunes and mountains with all the vibrations and a few hard knocks I imagine I have a few loose connections.

It seems to be ok at the moment but I'll remake all connections when the vehicle gets back.

It's a Puma. One other problem I had was that after a heavy knock/ landing the hazard lights would come on and could only be reset by turning the ignition on and off twice.

Thanks for all the info

It kept happening to me (TD5).
Turned out to be a partially blocked radiator.
