Everyone to their own - as I have said I am keeping mine for life I am not interested in re-sale values, I just want to preserve her as best I can. It has taken me a long time to get the money together to buy her. I am not wealthy by any means and to spend more than 4-5K on a car is crazy BUT 28K
 I must be nuts or just REALLY want a new Defender - yeah both! Landies are in my blood - who else would use a 109" as a daily drive, tours to France, greenlaing etc!!
I have never bought a new car before and never will again more than likely so I am making the most of it. This is a "special" vehicle for me not something that is a working tool that will be traded in after three years. We all have different reasons for owning a Defender "It is the most versatile vehicle in the world" after all and different owners will use and look after their motors in different ways - for me at the moment it is new and shiny with a great new smell and i want to hang on that and soak it up for as long as I can. You see I am REALLY into cars and I JUST LOVE MY DEFENDER - you can keep your Disco's, Range Rovers, Audi's, Porches - snore zzzzzzzzzz They are NOT a Defender are they... NOTHING else is!! I sat in mine in my garage for over an hour tonight just looking and fiddling with things - that's what lifes about to me and I know many who do the same. You know the ones! You see a stool in the corner of the garage and an empty beer can on the workbench  |

I loved my defender and would call myself a "proper" LR owner, whatever that means...but my range rover just has something the defender doesn't...I know it can do everything the defender can...just like the disco...and get there faster with mre comfort.
Enjoy your defender...but there is one step too far...I planned to keep mine for ever and sold it...I did a lot of preventative maintenance and something else would go...I think that's it...for all the planning...your not solving a problem your just moving it! Enjoy it... Mike |

Defenders are a bit like women... fine when everything is new and shiney but the novelty wears off and you look for something better and more reliable. All the underseal in the world won't stop the rot, pretty disgraceful for a �30k motor and we are supposed to take it because someone decided they are an "icon". If BMW had all the rust and leaks after a winter or two they would be in deep shoite, but we put up with it and even convince ourselves they are good.
I just sold a Discovery 2 and in not one single department was it a worse car than a Defender... i miss it but won't miss the Defender one bit. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS.. |

 I could never fall out of love for a Defender and the novelty has never worn off.........
Maybe it's a different mind set - the sort people have for a classic car for instance or that something is in the blood because of a child hood memory e.g. you get many car enthusiasts loving a particular marque because their father owned one. It is that way with classic SAAB's for me. My father, also a car nut has had over 80 of them and always wanted a Land Rover Series or Defender and we looked at many but he just couldn't face the agricultural qualities and reputation for poor reliability. I was lucky enough to brush up my driving skills on a farm when I was 14 in a late Series 2A which was not dissimilar to the one I drive daily today. I saw so many of my mates buy them but didn't get one myself due to long distances I travelled and the reputation for unreliability so bought SAAB's instead. Shame as I really wanted one for years and they are as reliable as any vehicle if they are maintained properly. As said I drive mine on the school run, shopping etc AND work and it hasn't let me down for nearly two years of this now AND it's great FUN, tilt up, lovely sweet 2 1/4 petrol, no synchro, have to work at it to drive it - a vehicle that is soooo engaging. I will never sell it.....
So you can see where I come from a bit more, you see I simply love them, have done for over 30 years and to own one from new and throw away 28K on one as I will be keeping it for life shows how nuts I am over them. Life has it's up's and downs but all is OK in my world because I have my Defender. The only vehicle I ever missed and was very sad to sell was the worst in reality - my TD5 as it was falling to bits  So I know what they can get like.
The chassis should last a life time once protected properly there are many examples still going strong that have been looked after and not (my 109 is an old farm hack, used and abused, still on original chassis!) It will be the bulkhead, rear crossmember, rear 1/4, doors bottoms and window frame that will go eventually but that will be years off yet and all quite sortable when the times comes. I am lucky to be able to do all the work myself and enjoy doing it. So stripping her down in maybe 20 years time won't be a problem when/if she needs it. Don't get me wrong this is not a I love my Defender more than you i am just trying to get across to you how much I love them, modern cars just don't do anything for me, they are a driving experience that is just detached from the actual workings of the vehicle. The Defender although fly by wire is still great fun to drive as it has bags of interest and character and you can drive it through fords, do the school run in it, go to war in it, pull 3.5 tonnes for a living in it, use it as a camper, use it as a people carrier, fight fires with it, go green laning in it, plough fields with it, etc etc and of course it is classless. It is the original Iconic Land Rover, steeped in years of development going right back to the beautiful original lights behind the grill Series One's. No it's not a car to me or just another vehicle and now try something else, they are very much part of my life and give me a great deal of satisfaction, excitement and motivation. |

The 109" daily drive - GREAT fun in the summer, hard work in winter, no heating, no door sealing and get wetter inside than out BUT that's half the fun - kids love it
Lighten up Red Dot & Mse, there is a bloke on here really into his landies and he just got a brand new one and is REALLY enjoying it. Were all enthusiasts for the Defender on here......... Im not knocking you either - i think, certainly for me - its got a little intense, im glad your enjoying your land rover and its new etc - i really am, i think we all enjoy ours certainly when new and every time driven - but...! Im sure most on here have all had and done stuff to land rovers, ive messed with a S1 (cants stand series ), 90/110's, Defender (90/110), disco(s), freelander(s) and range rovers, including my sport. Changed engines, bodies, gearboxes (many), body types, resprayed them blah blah blah
Done the whole own for life, done the whole best vehicle off road, done the whole card carrying LR/RR supporter (which i am) - in fact done the whole LR thing, short of dressing up in camo and going to shows (although ive done the odd show) - i draw the line...I have committed (short of it being nick) i will keep my disco for life - ive not OCD'd on it, but its chassis had been cared for (as was all my land rovers except the sport which is nice) and at some point in the next 12-18 months when i have recovered the cost of buying the range rover, i will rebody the disco Just seems excessive - maybe i should post about every mile i drove in the range rover either on here or the rrsport forum - because ive enjoyed each one 10 times more than the same defender miles, but im sure someone would linch me (rightly) or fitting the extra odds and sods to it - or polishing it (weekly despite its protections) or the 0.03mm stone chip...although i have just noticed ive not been taking many photos when i get to cool places - so probably couldnt Get out and drive it - it could be written off tomorrow!
