Bear in mind that connector corrodes!
When I was fiddling with mine I pulled the fuse for safety's sake, much easier than disconnecting the battery.
I fitted a 2 pole Superseal connector on there so it's waterproof, rated at 14A I believe which is lower than the wiring and fuse but I'm never going to be using over that so suits ideally for me.
Surprising how damp it gets around there.
I think if you can get good connectors it makes these things look much better and a lot less DIY.
Is there a connector on the market that will fit the rear of the lighter socket too and not just have to use ins spades?

Just completed this this afternoon, socket of fleaBay for 2 of the queens pounds took for ever to come from china but is really quite good. Soldered the wires on, heat shrunk the connections and fitted a durite superseal connecter for no other reason than it came to hand first rummaging in my tech van.

30 mins or so later Boom Shocked new aux socket in the back!

Many thanks this forum for that idea and all who contributed to this tread Mr. Green

Same here -- picked up a 20A rated socket and fitted it this morning. Found the config of the connector matched the spade connectors on the the socket I bought exactly, so no need for extensions. Magic. 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

I fitted a power socket there about twelve months ago; it’s been a useful mod very handy for a work light. One thing I have noticed though is when using the socket with a plug with a tell tale led the led doesn’t light up; I only noticed this yesterday when working around that area and thought I would put my phone on to charge. The phone lead has a led light on it which did not come on. At first I thought there was a fault with the socket. As when I plugged the phone lead into the socket on the dash the led lights ok. Thinking the socket was faulty I was about to remove the trim but then I tried my work light and it worked ok. So the socket is working but using a plug with a led I get no light tried a couple of other plugs with same result. Anybody else noticed this; I know it doesn’t really matter as long as the socket works, but its bugging me not knowing why the led doesn’t light up. Could it be to do with the led needing an earth like some switches have? Don’t know, still trying to work it out. Any thoughts on this.
Regards to all Fletch.

^^ Did you connect the purple wire to the + of the socket? LEDs need to be wired correct polarity to function. Not sure about your socket, but on the one from Mudstuff which I used there is a + mark on one of the connectors. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

SORTED, took off the trim to make sure about the orientation of the wires (purple to plus) ok but when looking further the + symbol was going to neg i.e. the body not the centre connection. Swapped the wires round and led lights ok now. Isn’t cheap Chinese stuff great, serves me right. Thanks for putting the idea about the polarity in my head. I just assumed that + would actually be + and would have took a lot longer to find an answer. I love this forum.
Fletch.

I've got a 2001 110 double cab and it also has the permanently live purple wire. However it is not wired into a t shaped socket with a black wire. It is just on its own with an insulated bullet style connector. Looks factory fitted connector as moulded to wire. There is also a black wire bundled with a green/black wire. The black one appears to be an earth. No idea on the other one. Also have two other unused sets of wires. I'm guessing only used on full hardtops. Maybe rear washer and wiper?

Picked up the wrong hole saw Big Cry now need new speaker surround......as I'm lining the drill up I'm thinking it's too big but thought stayed in brain and didn't transmit to finger - hence big hole.

I did. Measured it several times etc but after doing that I then managed to pick up the wrong tool (hole saw) and went straight onto auto pilot!?

Any recommendations on where to get replacement asap?

oh dear , don't worry we all done it at sometime , one of those 'oh bo!!ocks ' moments

glue a flat piece of plastic on the back over the hole then cut RIGHT size hole and when the socket is fitted doubt you would notice the mistake

you may find that recovering from your mistake and not just buying a new part will give you better satisfaction ! , when the job turns out ok
