Strange noise on overrun.
Started yesterday, on over run there is a metallic rattle/chatter, goes under load.
Where do I start the investigations? It just gets louder, not faster.

Propshaft journals.
Check with wheels chocked, out of gear and handbrake off.
Rear of front shaft most likely.

Any freeplay in the journals or the flange fastenings.

Just go underneath and try to move each end of each shaft.
A push-pull motion should be repeated at approximately 90 degrees to the first attempt.
If everything seems secure there are several other possibilities.

Is it easy to repalce? It just gets louder, not faster.

You need to remove the propshaft complete.
A replacement universal joint is around £30 (OEM ones come in a Britpart box!), best to replace both while it's out. If you're unsure how to do it a local garage will charge you for about an hour.
Once you've got the shaft out engage the difflock and take it for a drive. If you still get the noise then that's not your problem. Don't forget to take the difflock out after you've put the repaired shaft back in.
Alternatively, a new propshaft will cost about £160.

i would GKN hardy spicer ones if you are doing UJ prop joints. bar far the best quaility for the money. Bearmach do them. Its a pretty easy job - once you have seen how to do it. have a look in the tech archive on lR4x4 there is bound to be a write up on there about it. Cheers

Britpart ones are GKN as far as I know.
I've just had my front prop done.

all is good then.

£30 seems steep though. Cheers

For info, I bought a pair of genuine GKN HD ujs (oversize bearings) for my Puma DC rear prop a couple of weeks ago from Dingocroft for about £19 each.

I was judging the price by Ebay prices.
Haven't had the bill from my garage yet.
