BFT ATs showing cracking/age cracks?
i have a set of BFG ATs, just over 2years old and 24k miles on them. they are starting to show what i would describe as age cracking signs around the base of the blocks of tread. i have another set that are 8-10 years old and aren't showing any degradation.

I seem to remember a thread somewhere (or comments) about some BFG tyres being affected and failing unexpectedly, can anyone remember the outcome? Cheers

I think there has been a couple of threads and/or posts James, the first one didn't really have a final outcome posted by the OP, the second one had the tyre replaced (by Paddocks I think).

Whats the date of manufacture mark on the tyre?

It should appear as something like this (4th week in 2004)

Sounds similar to this:

Second page has the clearest photos Thumbs Up

Those were bought late 2011 - would be interesting to compare the date/place of manufacture (if they hadn't been shredded). Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Im sure lots of tyre suppliers sell stock that has been sitting on warehouse shelves for years, knowing the public won't even look at the date stamp.

Even on brand new cars/caravans you can expect the tyres to be already a year old as I think the car manufacturers buy them in bulk for the year ahead production. Its worse for us caravanners as tyres should be changed at 7/8 yes old. If the tyre is already 18 months old when purchased then their usable time is already reduced.

As for buying new tyres I would always look at the manufacture date before allowing them to be fitted. I think it is advised that car tyres be changed after 10 yrs old (from manufacture), but dont quote me.

.

In Germany, car tyres about every 5 years and lorry tyres (I include Defenders) every 10. There are no hard and fast rules unless there's significant damage (including cracking) then it's the bin for 'em.

Experience with "passing down" various bicycles/tyres over 25 years (4 kids) has shown how poorly (and how well) different rubber can age. The cheaper modern stuff is the worst Rolling Eyes Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Cracking on tyres is not just age related.

Degradation of tyres is due to several factors including heat, salt, UV etc

Checking the DOT date is first thing to do.

OK, maybe silly question are you sure thet were brand new?

Next question what depth of tread blocks can you measure?

Would be interesting to compare with other tyres.

also alloy wheel cleaning fluid can cause cracking if not washed off

I presume that alloy wheel cleaner is an acid solution then?

That begs the question why clean your wheels with something that might attack a vital safety component of your vehicle, i.e. tyres?
