TD5 idle mode when wet??
Good Morning I have just joined this forum so a little intro is needed. I am a Landrover nut, farm sheep and cattle in the Molteno district of South Africa. Cow Sheep I have a Freelander 2, a Puma HCPU farm vehicle and my toy is a fully kitted 90 Special edition. TD5. Help!! My 90 when it is wet goes into limp mode. I can drive all day in the rain but as soon as it gets splashed from underneath, ie a pool of water it goes to idle. I have checked the harness for oil, clean, I have had it at agents and top private guys, earths were cleaned. The error report says no driver input. After about 6 hours she dries out and runs perfectly. I few points: 1) If I switch off. depress the throttle half way the engine revs up and this has rescued me a few times but the moment you release the throttle it goes to idle. Restart the same way and it revs up, not good for turbo's etc. 2) if I depress the clutch pedal and apply half throttle she revs but on release back to idle. What got wet? Must be a short some where that gets wet then dries out. Anything to try is welcome. pwgg

Driver input error is normally throttle pedal assembly. I assume this is not getting wet whilst you are playing? If not it could be the wires from the ECU to the pedal assembly being damaged and shorting due to the water. This can happen as the loom goes out from the ECU box, over the trans box and along the gear box. Worth a check.

Thanks for this, the experts say there is nothing wrong with the throttle assembly , but it is worth a try. Re: the wires that was also in my mind, it is the obvious place to get wet. I have scratched a bit but it is so difficult to get in there to see properly. I had heard that you can replace all six throttle wires and rout them separately.?? You can run cables direct from ECU to pedal. Simple enough job, if you wish to do this then let me know and I will dig my notes out. On early Td5's it is six cables, and later ones it is seven. You can use the cable for trailer towing electrics as it is about the correct size and has enough cores.

Black ECU plug.

ECU pin 12 - white green - pedal connector F - sensor 1
ECU pin 36 - white grey - pedal connector K - sensor 2
ECU pin 26 - black yellow - pedal connector D - earth
ECU pin 26 - black yellow - pedal connector G - earth
ECU pin 20 - red green - pedal connector C - sensor 3
ECU pin 14 - white purple - pedal connector B - supply 5v
ECU pin 14 - white purple - pedal connector J - supply 5v

thanks for this. I am thinking of getting some of the small spade connectors and making up a separate loom so that I can just remove the connectors from the plug and put my own in. I am 400 km from an agent or anyone that that knows anything about a Landrover so if I make a mistake I can always go back to the default configuration. Will tackle it next week then find a puddle and test it. Very Happy It is most embarrassing driving a dry weather Landy. My nephew with his Disco 3 always ribbing me. pwgg

Apologies for jumping in, but is there any chance you could post some instructions please? (assume that I'm hard-of-understanding)...

Just had this exact same problem rectified with my 2003 110, it was the wiring harness to the throttle pedal that was causing the problem so that section of the harness has been replaced with new wiring. I too was feeling embarrassed driving a Landy that broke down every time it went through a puddle!

I was initially told by a mechanic that it would be the pedal assembly so bought one that I now don't need. Glad I spoke to a Land Rover specialist before fitting it!

You don't need to apologise for asking a question, that is what this place is for Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I will try to answer any questions that you have.

The job of replacing the loom was a major job in my head, but was in actual fact very simple and something I wish I'd done earlier, I only did it due to desperation.

You need to identify the wires on the ECM plug (as mentioned above), find the wires behind dash from the pedal. Then it's just a case of running wires between the two points. I used trailer cable as is a good size and has the required number of wires. I run the cable direct from ECM, along the chassis, up bulkhead, and in cab behind instruments. Will try to dig out more info if required (although believe the majority of this has been ingested by puppy) and answer questions you have.

Hi, I sold my 90 with the problem, I tried all over South Africa for the little terminals but could not source them, so gave up. I did a long trip in July, nearly fell off my roof while folding the tent so decided that I needed a different vehicle so traded for a Disco XS. Great car. pwgg

How did you connect the new cable to the plugs at each end? did you remove the old cable and crimp onto the pin, or did you splice into the existing cables?
