Any recommendations for cool boxes/fridges for use in an awning? This one looks good and can be used on 12v whilst in the car or on 240v plugged into the external plug socket on my caravan..

I have an icey-tek cool box and a national luna 50 litre weekender fridge/freezer (12v/240v) both work well for me.

We use that one for our camping trips. It's v good for the price and keeps butter n beer nicely chilled. When the weather dropped to below 15c we had ice forming. In 30c in Italy it kept fruit, meat etc fresh for days and beer was as cool as our fridge at home. It does need a clean out of condensed water every few days in hot weather so I'd invest in a tray/rack to keep things off the bottom. I did look at a proper one but couldn't justify the £500 or so. Ive read that there are a few issues with using it in a car, something to do with fluctuating voltage when turning off the ignition causing the fridge to switch off. Tp be honest I think I would only use it on mains power once ive arrived on site and the caravan is pitched. I guess I could run it at home the day/night before departure to get cold, leave it unplugged in the car during the journey, then plug in when arriving at the caravan site.
Nice to hear a good review. Im wanting one for when I caravan at this years Silverstone F1. Theres gunna be me & 2 other blokes in the caravan, all wanting beer and meat (but not in a gay way!  )
I like the icey-tek, especially the padded seat. I assume you have to put your own ice in there to keep it cool? |

I've had one of these for about 3 years. Great box for the money. I put in in the back of the car when we go across to France with the tintent & it keeps everything nice & cool. When I get to the site I then plug it in to the external socket on the tintent & it sits there happily chilling my beers for 3 weeks. Also bought a small Stella beer fridge from flea bay & that works well to, however only 240v. |

Engel for me, you pay for what you get, Engels can be repaird if faulty and also have a good range of accessories.

An absorption type cool box costing roughly £100-150 can not really be compared to a good quality 4 x 4 compressor fridge/freezer costing say £600-1,000.
Apart from the difference in price, a absorption coolbox uses a lot more current then a proper fridge/freezer and can not cool down as low as a decent fridge/freezer nor can cope with high external temperatures. Comparing good quality 4 x 4 fridge/freezers? We have used both the Engel MT45 and the ARB 47 fridges extensively and in our opinion the ARB is superior to the Engel. I am sure that some peoples opinion will differ with some people saying Engel/National Luna/Waeco/ARB are best. One thing is certain a good quality compression fridge is better then an absorption coolbox., however there is a sizeable price difference. Pick the best quality kit which suits your individual needs. Brendan |

Thanks Brendan. My budget will only allow an absorption toolbox unfortunately. I guess if I was using it more long term then it would be worthwhile spending more on a compressor fridge. Useful to know nonetheless

we use our engel as an extra fridge at christmas and some other occasions throughout the year it really comes handy and perfect for picnics

I always keep cold drinks and beer tucked behind the draught skirt in the awning. Even on a summer day they emerge almost ice cold

This what we used in the awning
This one I found on gum tree for £15 We now use it in the corner of the kitchen for kids drinks Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated  It's good to be back from the dark side

I came across a deal in Halfords for their 40 litre 12v/240v cool box reduced from £129 to £79, so ended up buying one.
