exact process for changing the fuel filter ?
I've done a search and there's lots of stuff about the filter like fill it with diesel and the threads are the opposite way round etc but I'm not confident to do it just yet. The sort of thing I'm a bit mystified about is - do you need to remove the road wheel ? How does the filter shroud come off ? Does it come off clockwise and is it lugs or threads?

Please advise as if you were showing a moderately trained chimp ! Laughing

I have always done it like this.

Get a good brand of filter. Not britpart as I had a mates puma die up the road caused buy a faulty filter sucking air.

You dont need to remove the wheel

Remove the metal cover from arround the filter

Fill up the new filter with clean diesel

Place a catch pan etc under the area where your working

Twist the old filter anti clock wise until it stops. Then pull it down.

Theres luggs. 3 if I remember. The largest towards you. You cant go wrong

Push the new filter up into the housing & turn clock wise until it stops

Start the engine & let it run. Best to have over half tank of fuel

Refit the housing over the filter

Job done.

There is a plastic nut on the cover on the rear wheel side of the cover. Loosen this-it will stay attached-then ease the cover off. It will have two retaining lugs on the side nearest the front wheel but will ease off o.k. Refit by siting the lugs in place then turn the plastic butterfly nut once it is correctly sited in it's retaining hole. It's a little fiddly but o.k.
Had to edit the origional post as I had everything arse about face,i.e. wrong way around. Whistle Hav'nt drained the filter recently! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thank you Spud. I drained mine the other day (havent changed it from new) and only a couple of drops of water came out followed by a load of diesel which went down my arm and ruined my jumper. I put it in the wash and the missus chucked it straight outside as the whole utility room smelled like a garage forecourt ! Laughing

When you screw it back on, it's not "seated" until you feel a definite click. It helps if you clean the new filter so it's not greasy and you can grip it properly. Try not to spill fuel down the side of it as you wont be able to grip it to turn it- it doesn't matter if its not full to the brim.

When I put up the origional reply and had second thoughts, I did the sensible thing. I sent the wife out with a flashlamp to check. Just as well as she confirmed that I was incorrect Mr. Green 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Couple of other little hints:

Clean the filter area before working on it. If you get some dirt in the new filter as you are fitting it you will have it sucked up to the pump/ injectors.

If you have a bleed tool, fit the new filter dry and then draw the fuel through- that way you reduce the chances of contamination even more.

right I've just done it. Messier than I thought. I wasn't prepared for the torrent of diesel that pishes out of the housing so another jumper ruined ! And the drive.

When I put the new filter in I didn't see any lugs so I just twisted it around gently until I felt it go up into the housing. Then I screwed it until I heard a faint plasticky clonk. Hopefully that means its seated properly. I noticed however that it was fairly easy to undo it if I twisted the filter anti clockwise so who knows.

The engine started fine so I left it idling for a few minutes and I didn't see any leaks around the housing. Does that mean its been done properly or if it isn't will I get air being sucked into the injectors ? Fingers crossed.

Was looking at this the other day, even with the quarter turn fastener tight the whole shield rattled.
