Additional Heater
Hi, My Defender 90 300tdi is without doubt the coldest Defender I have ever had...and Mrs Sweatysock is no longer up for it. So I was wondering what others solutions are in terms of auxiliary heating and the need for additional battery power etc. Oh by the way, I already have a grill muff to try to accelerate things

I am not up for spending a fortune but interested in views, thanks Sweatysock

How about a couple of mains powered tube heaters to warm the inside before you get in it then run them off of an inverter once on your way.Anyone tried anything similar ? 2005 Td5 90 XS

1st question. Does the engine get upto temperature in a reasonable time. If not, then your thermostat could be faulty Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

It is a county.

Good question re thermostat as I have not experienced this before in other Def's. In the summer it warms quickly but (as I have found) in the winter it seems to take forever and if at all in slow speeds in really cold weather....is this not the norm for a 300 ?. Sweatysock

I used to have a 600watt tube heater in my 110 station wagon, plugged into an extension overnight then the inverter when driving. It was better than nothing but needed more, yes the windows were free of frost but it was still cold. You I think you need at least 1000watts of heat source. If your engine heater is up to scratch when driving put a electric heater in overnight even if you switch it on an hour or so before you use the motor.
I now have an Eberspacher air heater, it's just the job. I switch it on 20 minutes before I want the motor and the windows are clear and it's really toasty plus left on the lowest setting compliments the dire heating a Td5 gives when on tick over in slow traffic etc. They do come to those that wait for the right price, it wasvon my wish list for the past 10years but well worth the wait!

My truck cab 300tdi gets toasty so you could always for the winter put screen between front and rear so you are just heating up the front.

When I was using the tubular heater as an overnight heat source I would use an extension lead from the garage, when the engine was running then I would use the inverter. Occasionally the inverter was being used with no engine running and at the time I only had one battery. I was confident that my motor was a good starter but also reliant on the fact that the inverter(Maplins purchase) had a low battery shutdown facility. I have now added a second battery and run all my ancillaries off that, which with the engine off is isolated from the starter battery. I must admit that I did feel concerned that just relying on the starter battery could have ended in tears but it didn't happen.
