2011, 110 2.4 and today it's not running so good and the ERG valve is making a right old racket. It must be the ERG as it squeaks loudly when I switch the engine off for its five cleaning cycles but it also squeaks at low engine speeds, at junctions and that type of thing, I'm guessing that's the ERG working it's magic? It's a similar sound to suspension squeaks but it's not that.
However, it's under warranty so it's their problem but what happens when the EGR fails? Would it cause any other damage or would it just be a slightly worse running engine and worse economy? Is it something I could put off for a while? Should I unplug it in the mean time? Thanks people. |

Steve, am I right that remap will only work if the valve's closed to start with? If the valve's dying and may get stuck open, better to pull the plug whilst it's closed and put up with the MIL until the cavalry (e.g. BAS or Alive) arrive... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Yes that is true but depends on situation. Best course of action if you ask me is to get it replaced at the dealer being so new. Once replaced if he chose to it could then be closed and disabled. ____\We|Will|Win/___

My EGR packed up when the truck was 6 months old. The MIL light went on and the car went in limp mode. Happened several times within a few days, so took it back to the dealer, and they replaced it under warranty. Has been running perfect ever since (that is now more than 4 years). As your truck is under warranty, get LR to solve it, which obviously will be by replacing it, as a remap to keep the EGR closed is not in their handbook, and actually I think would compromise your further warranty rights.
One thing I have clearly noticed was that as long as I was running local supermarket diesel (first 2 years), the EGR cleaning cycle was a bit noisy, even if it worked fine, but I think it must be a good 2 years now that I switched to using premium fuels only, almost exclusively BP Ultimate that is. Once I did that, the cleaning cycle completely changed tone, much gentler now, any roughness in the sound of that cleaning cycle is entirely gone. Good luck with LR, and keep your warranty uncompromised ![]() http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Thanks for the replies.
I will definitely get it replaced but wondered if it's a get it to the dealer while it's still running problem or something I could put off until I'm next off work. I'm glad I can put it off as I only started a new job on Thursday, bit soon to be getting days off for breakdowns. ![]() I quite like the idea of a re-map but also like the fact I can put any old crap in it and it'll run happily. It seems re-maps do away with that 'feature'. |

As eric says, don't compromise your warranty
![]() Bear in mind though that the portable remap interfaces that many on here (including me) use, allow you to revert to the original software whenever you want (untraceable by LR). Secondly, you can use sh*t diesel in a standard or remapped Defender - it just makes both of them run like sh*t ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Hi AndyS, I'm not an expert on remapping but I think you are incorrect in your statement regarding remaps and fuel quality. A Defender with a remap can still cope with a wide range of fuel qualities as proved by some of the South African members on this forum. Certainly it can cope with anything found in the " Western World". |

Should have said additionally in my post that since I switched to premium fuels, not only the EGR cleaning cycle became much more gentle, but the engine overall is running much quieter. With the supermarket fuels there was a blacksmith hammering away somewhere under the bonnet, with BP Ultimate that guy apparently went for retirement ![]() http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Andy I know its been said a thousand times here but when you get your new EGR a good squirt of 2-stroke oil when re fuelling helps to keep it clean. My '11 Puma is mostly used for frequent very short journeys and the self clean cycle sounds more like 5 barely audible 'shukas' - not even chukas (the forum standard sound of the cleaning cycle). I assume the smoother the chukas the less gunged up the EGR - from what I've read here anyway !

I would never use supermarket fuel quickest way to feck your injectors up ![]() Just had my Egr changed under warranty but I was told that some garages won't change them unless it shows a fault up on the computer which I found out when Guy salmon wakefield refused to change it even though it was making a racket and you could here it working When I got it changed at another dealer they said it was stuck half way ![]() |
