A great find this thread...

So, I looked on ebay and found the VW one being sold in the UK for Ģ18, but then I see there's a Land Rover one too and one by Bearmach.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defen...SwFNZWvqsm

Do these have the same programmable feature? Is it the same thing? It'c cheaper at Ģ10.

The Range Rover L322 from 2002-2009MY had this programmable feature for the rear wipers but it was removed at 2010MY for some reason. It was a great feature I now miss. 2016 D4 HSE

Have just modified the rear wiper to get variable intermit.

Easy mod - move 2 wires, add a 12v and ground connection and fit one link.

Biggest hassle is getting the connectors out of the existing relay base.

I'll post the wiring diagram when I have corrected it.

Works like the front - press the switch, let it wipe, switch it off, wait until you want it to wipe again, switch it on, and leave it - the wipers operate on intermit at the time you left between switching off and back on again.

Hi Barney, I have just been looking at the back door of my 110, Am I being a bit thick or shouldnt it be simpler to replace the relay already there with the 99 and rewire the switch feed to the checkwipe terminal as all the wiring is already there.

Hmm I shall have a think about it, but as its been 3 years since I fitted a 99 to the front then I think I may procratinate and ponder a bit longer.

Besides, we now have a new 90 tdci to fettle up alongside my now venerable 110 He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

OK sussed it! Just need to find the spare 99 I have lying around and try it out.

With the help of the following diagram for you can see that instead of piggybacking the existing relay with a 99 you should be able to replace the existing relay but move the Red/LightGreen wire from terminal 53m to the smaller "I" terminal.

As you can see from the loom in the rear door of my TD5 the wires in to the relay socket are still the same colours.

You can see that the motor takes just the earth (Black/Green), Ignition Live (White/LightGreen), and Activation wires (Red/LightGreen)

Mt, I was impressed by Barneyīs solution using both relays, and equally impressed with your proposal to reduce it down to one, as used for the front wiper. Wondering why Barney didnīt already go this route, I sat down with a cuppa and studied his wiring diagram.

https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...ations.pdf

Iīm really only an amateur at this, so may be barking up the wrong tree.

It looks like the original rear wiper switch, switches to earth. However, the variable intermittent wiper relay needs a positive switched input. The first relay basically converts the wiper switch input from a negative into a 12V positive signal. This signal then feads the intermittent input (I). The rest is identical to the front wiper intermittent wiring in your diagram.

(You could probably convert the switch at the dash into a positve switching one, and save the second relay. Somewhere on the forum thereīs been a thread about converting the negative switching front spotlight switch.....)

I shall try Barneyīs solution out at the weekend. Having the wash/wipe function coupled is enough reason on itīs own, to do this mod. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Interesting remarks there Wild Card.

Looks like I may need to do a bit more wiring research too Shocked

Its somthing I need to get around to as lack of checkwipe annoys me. besides we also have a new 90 to start fettling but as its only a month old I dont want to invalidate any warranty yet.

So wile its lovely to drive, has a fantastic heater etc it dosnt have heated mirrors, hydraulic strutt on the rear door or programable checkwipe He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

Yesterday I had some time to have a play with the rear wiper.

Having converted my rear wiper to use the front wiper relay (with fixed delay) a while back, I seem to remember at the time trying a 99 relay in there, and not getting my head around why it ddnīt work. It just behaves like a fixed delay relay (about 5 seconds) and cannot be programmed.

Just to check, I popped the 99 in to the holder, with the same result as previously.

I then prepared the loom and relays, as of Barneyīs wiring plan, with both the orignal and 99 relays.

Voila - progammable rear wiper works just like the front one. All very plug and play. No damage done to the original wiring.

Barney, thanks! Excellent mod. You are the man! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

In operation the original relay clicks only once, with the dash switch. The 99 relay then clicks at the programmed interval, activating the wiper.

Now I just have to connect up one wire to activate the check wipe function from the washer switch.
I have run a wire (from the T contact on the 99) through the rubber conduit at the door. Today, i should get round to running it along the rest of the loom to the front.

Iīll post some pictures. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
