a decat wont help power than much, especially on cars that are running standard or average powerd tunes. the intake on the puma is the main problem.

You can't stop spiking- it is impossible as a turbo system is 'reactive'. When you accelerate the turbo will give you 100% possible boost until you reach the required level designated by the ECU. The ECU will then adjust the vanes in the turbo to stop the boost increasing past parameters.

BUT in the time it takes the ECU to read the pressure and then adjust the vanes the turbo will still be giving more boost than needed- this is your over-boost/ spike/ surge. This is can be prevented but you will never hit full boost during normal driving.

The spike will be there for a fraction of a second and isn't to be worried about- EVERY turbo vehicle does this.

Have a look on Google images and do a search for 'Turbo boost graph' and it will come up with loads of pictures of peoples data-logging and you will see that everyone has a spike as the engine manifold pressure hits the required level.

The only time to worry and need to take action on it is when it is constant overboost and not spikes.

Nice reply Glyn Smile

To add to it, as said by Glyn the turbo and all turbos at some point will spike even if its only a small amount, turbos that are sticking or are warn can spike for longer than a mechaniclly perfect turbo.

We have found on some aged Puma's when very hot the turbo can become sticky on the vains and because the "motor" actuation is now slower it causes spiking more than standard, when they cool down a little they free them selfs and the spiking goes back to a mimimium again.
