Starter Motor Removal
I have read countless threads across the interweb describing how to do this. Maybe it's because i'm working under the car in the snow when it's minus 2 outside but I can't locate the 15mm "nut from hell"

I've removed all other fastenings.

I'm contemplating undoing the fixings on the fuel cooler to try and get batter access. Maybe even removing the intake manifold.

Any ideas??

Even better pictures!

You need a flexi head extension about 5" long... usually easier from the top.

If you can bump start it, bring it over to the workshop and can do it in the warm.

Ahh that little devil!
The way I did it was. 15mm socket on a small extension, put this on from the inside the engine bay looking down (its a tight fit but doable) and then with the socket and extension on, dive underneath and then put the ratchet on
trying not to dislodge the socket/extension.

Its a difficult one to do, even more so in the cold! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Cheers Ian, It's parked so awkwardly I can't get it moved enough to bump it. I'll battle on tomorrow. I can't find my 1/4 or 3/8 sockets Shocked so have been battling with my 1/2 drive set. Just too clumsy (like myself!)

Very difficult, if not impossible, to get at it with a 1/2" drive set, you really need a 3/8" set with a nice long extension and i personally do it all from underneath. The first time i did one was in the snow on a friends disco in the pub car park, it wasnt much fun!!

Pete.

I did mine with a 1/2" drive last year, IIRC I put a 6" extension on the socket, then a long one and another one and the ratchet ended up near the radiator! It did make I cuss quite a bit but doable Whistle

I've got to locate the darn nut first. It seems that every pipe and wire that could be run over the starter has been just to make it harder. Does anyone have a TD5 engine out of the car that could be photographed so I can try to visualise it?
