Budget Price to replace clutch?
Noticed that the Clutch started rattling today. 65k 2013 so possibly a bit early, but it’s a landy!? Was thinking of ordering a LOF set up, but don’t have the time or gear to install myself. What should I be expecting to pay? For those that have LOF, what is it like compared to a standard replacement and should it last longer? I don’t tow and it’s a 90 HT.

Is there anything else I should be doing whilst the clutch being swapped?

Cheers
Col

Just done TV the maths and the LOF version is 3x the price of the standard replacement. Assuming each subsequent LR clutch lasts 65k and given my annual mileage, the LOF version will have to last 20 years to pay itself back. Minus labour for the 2 expected LR clutches in between. Tough to justify.

Have to add in at least a full days labour as well if paying someone to do it.

I swapped over just to get rid of the clunking and upgraded just to put the issue to bed. Cost is one thing... hassle of doing it again is another.

For me clutch feels like standard to use. More nvh between 1500 and 1800rpm... get a bit of vibration which makes the rear mirror wobble a bit in lower gears but the original clutch springs were totally stuffed so could have happened with a new standard one?

Thanks Mike. Interestingly the rattle disappeared this morning, sounds as smooth as you like!

My 2007 Puma was on its third clutch by the time it reached 65k miles! Rolling with laughter The early ones really were that bad, they have improved considerably.

It is now at just over 240k miles and needs another new one, which will be number 6, although number 5 has lasted just over 90k sofar (which is about the minimum I would expect from a modern non-DMF clutch). This time round I have opted fo a Transit 4x4 clutch, since these are reckoned by many to be significantly better than event the latest stock Defender clutches.

If you are changing the clutch, the most important other part to check is the outout adaptor shaft coupling (between the MT82 and LT230) which is notorious for failing. At the very least, inspect and lubricate it.

My 2012 2.2Tdci was on it's 3rd clutch at 30k! However, the 3rd clutch installed at 30k is still going strong at 71k.

I agree with above to check the output shaft. James

I had mine replaced 3 weeks ago with an LOF clutch as all the springs in my stock one were loose @40k miles.

I had already bought the clutch from a show and so was charged £620 labour which was the cheapest I could find locally. That was with safari engineering.

Keith Gotts near me was quoting double that at £1,200 for just the labour Shocked - They also wanted to charge extra to replace the output shaft on top of that! Safari engineering included fitting the output in with the price of the clutch change.

Hi blackwolf

Are there any issue with using the Transit 4 X 4 clutch set up in a Puma Defender, considering the Transit has a DMF.

The 4x2 transit has a DMF, but the 4x4 Transit does not, and the 4x4 Transit clutch is a direct swap for the Puma one.

See https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic34603.html for more info and pictures.

Hi blackwolf

Thank you for you reply and the clarification.

Looks like I will be ordering a SACHS 3000 950 727 clutch kit then as a replacement!
