What sat nav do you run, what's good about it ? Would you buy it again ?

Garmin app on my iphone just brilliant.
Works great with my Parrot Asteriod

TomTom Go 530 UK & Ireland. Had it a few years now and have to say it's very good. I subscribed to map updates for a year because they sent me a special offer, so it downloads a new set of maps through the TomTom Home desktop software 4 times a year.
GOOD POINTS: - Very well timed announcements, especially on big roundabouts - says 'take the exit' at exactly the right moment, every time. - Lane guidance is very good, always accurate to the road layout and is useful in certain situations. - Interface is fairly simple to use, although the touch screen a bit clunky at times. - Reads out road numbers and street names in announcements, which can be useful. - IQ routes works out the best route based on average traffic patterns (mine doesn't have the live traffic info). - Very rarely says 'make a u-turn' - usually just calculates an alternative pretty quickly. - Get full software updates for the device from TomTom, so it runs on the latest operating system. BAD POINTS: - TomTom supplied mount was utter crap (they don't use this style anymore). But had to buy an aftermarket replacement, which is infinitely better. - Has a really annoying habit of saying 'keep right' when it just wants you to stay on the motorway / dual carriageway and not take the exit. Would be better off just saying nothing. - If you don't have a postcode and just navigating by place name (which we have done often on holiday), small places are often missing from the database (particularly in Devon and Cornwall). Not a major problem, you just find the nearest slightly bigger place, but annoying. I think most units will suffer from this though. I think that's about it really, but I would definitely buy another TomTom without any hesitation. And I'm sure they have a whole load of new features since I got mine. Always gets me where I want to go and I find it extremely easy to follow, which is the main thing after all! Once had a Garmin and a TomTom side by side in central London (don't ask why, just the way it happened!) and ended up turning the Garmin off, the TomTom was a lot easier to follow. I've got a Garmin Zumo 550 cost about 500 back in 2007
 I got it mainly to use on the motorbike as it's waterproof ,petrol proof & glove freindly buttons. I must be on my 5th unit by now nearly all of them being replaced under warranty. Suffers from freezing that involves removing the battery using a 2.5mm allen key that's most annoying when you have to stop take your gloves off find the allen key remove the battery, replace it and then wait for it to reboot.

I have a Garmin GPSIII, connected to the carPC I built, with a 10" dash screen.
running memory map. for UK i've got 1:50 and 1:25000 scale, and some other "route planning" maps, and some europe (although the 110 hasn't left these sunny isles yet....) works well. and have a bag of paper maps in case of failure. |

I've got a, quite old now, Tom Tom Go 910 that was top of the range at the time. It's still an excellent unit, although the battery isn't up to much any more. It came with world maps installed, which have proved invaluable all over Europe and also in the US. Jumping into a hire car in the middle of the night in Florida was much less painful than it could have been with this thing in hand luggage.
My wife has a top spec Freelander 2 that has built-in LR sat nav, but it's not as good as the old Tom Tom. Less intuitive to use and less acurate on finding shortest/quickest routes. I have a SWHMBO MK 2 - works a treat with the AA 2012 atlas
Sorry to say I have had a Porsche, Freelander, Focus and BMW all with sat navs fitted as standard. All of them would have taken me on a road that was closed 12 years ago on my way from work if I had followed them
I actually use a MM Adventurer 2800 with MM OS maps and paper back up on and off road and it works a treat

I run an iPhone 4 with ViewRanger and the TOM TOM app, I also have an iPad 2 running the same.
I can have turn by turn navigation and moving mapping running at the same time, the bonus of having iPhone functions running through the bluetooth connected stereo is nice, using an internet radio app is the icing on the cake.
