Received an early birthday present from my better half. An ARB portable compressor as well as the ARB inflator with gauge. Just goes to show she does listen to my wants/needs ramblings on etc.
![]() So my first thoughts on lifting the box was it was not to heavy, and on opening was pleased to see the build quality and finish of the compressor. The kit comes in a plastic type tool box with the compressor already mounted with a separate isolating switch, crocodile clips with a good length of cable with an integrated fuse holder with a 40amp maxi fuse plus the 20ft quick coupling hose. Aesthetically pleasing it is, but does it work? ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge I connected up the crocodile clips to the Pumas battery and fitted the hose and gauge which just clipped in effortlessly. ![]() Click image to enlarge Once the power switch is placed to on, the compressor starts up and then shuts down once the operating pressure has been reached, there as not a lot of noise from the compressor when working either. I dropped the pressure in the tyre down to 20psi and then connected up the gauge to the tyre valve just to have a play with it. The gauge gave a reading of 20 psi as did my independent gauge so I was happy that the ARB gauge was accurate. In no time at all after pressing the gauge handle the tyre pressure was up to 34 psi. I rechecked the reading with the independent gauge and it showed 34 psi as well so now doubly happy the gauge read correctly. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge One thing that is worth remembering is that when you pack it up again you need to be careful not to touch the compressor as it gets very hot in use. It draws about 32amps when working and has a 50% cycle rate because of the heat generated when working. Also it would be advisable because of the current draw to have the engine running when using the compressor as I'm sure it would drain a battery pretty quickly when trying to blow up four tyres. The hose is 20ft long and does reach all the way round a Puma but is to short to blow up the tyres on the tin can when hitched, so I have asked Brendan to get me the 20ft extension hose to overcome this niggle. I am very happy with this compressor and as every part is replaceable should last a few years and IMHO well worth the asking price. ![]() http://4x4overlander.com/tyre-equipment/arb-compressor.html http://4x4overlander.com/tyre-equipment/ar...gauge.html All the techy stuff available from the main ARB Australia website: http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-air-compressors/ Brian. @SGH, I did consider doing on board air, but as I currently don't plan on fitting airlockers any time soon I dismissed it. But now I am reconsidering as the output from the small compressor is pretty impressive, and the CKMTA12 you have on order is basically two CKMP12 compressors tied together to double the output meaning with the addition of the external ARB 4 litre air tank I could also power air tools and it has a 100% duty cycle compared to the 50% of the CKMP12. I wonder how hot the CKMTA12 gets in use?

Glad you like the ARB compressor Brian.
Have tried the cheap motorist shop compressor, a Truckair, a Viair 400 and the ARB CKMP 12. Of those I personally prefer the ARB one. I would suggest you replace the crocodile clips with an Anderson connector, saves undoing battery box. It is worthwhile throwing some maxi 40 amp fuses in the box. When finished with the compressor, let any stored out of the compressor, undo electrical connector before disconnecting airline. Gives it a chance to cool down. If considering air lockers, care is needed on chossing compressors as these types of compressors may require a pressure regulator to use with air lockers. The best compressor I have used is an engine mounted compressor along with a 9 litre tank at 150 psi ![]() Another good compressor is ![]() 255/85/16 from 0 psi to 40 psi in 2.5 minutes using that compressor ![]() I know that some of the comp boys use the ARB twin compressors like these ![]() Brendan Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated ![]() |

I was in Croatia 2 yrs ago when Jim Marsden was trialling this compressor. He rated it. Performed well over a 7 day tough offroad comp. If I was in the market for a decent compressor then this is what I would be spending my money on ![]() 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |
