Can you use SMXS in the Transfer box ?
The year is up and I'm going to change the Tbox oil. Last time I used Syntrax 75/90 GL4/5 ( and in the gearbox SMXS 75/90 GL3/4). I know their names have changed to universal and multivehicle or something like that.

There's not much difference in price between the two and because SMX is fully synthetic I was wondering if its OK for the transfer box or even better ?

The distinctions between the GL 3/4/5 types seem to be blurred these days as the good stuff has no bronze-damaging chlorine so would SMX in the Tbox be unecessary silliness or bad in some way?
Just wondered. Thanks

GL5 oils have a higher proportion of EP and anti-scuffing agents and are better suited to the higher point contact loads encountered in differentials and final drive units - so no, do not use GL4 oil in the transfer box.
In some cases you may be able to use a synthetic GL5 oil instead of GL4 but unless specifically recommended by Landrover or an oil manufacturer, I for one would certainly not use it in the Defender gearboxes.

Rossy, have a look at this. You won't have to spend much to get free delivery from Mick's Garage. Here is their recommendation for the Puma.

In fact you can use GL-4 in the Tbox (not gl-3 though) as specs states it. Puma 110" SW
