Galvanizing steel hinges?
As these are not the norm today, is there a problem in doing this?
In perfect world one would just have the hinges hot dipped and be done with it.
Why is this not done? Pin being the issue?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, I tried to seach but pulled a blank.

No reason why you couldn't..... knock the pin out (it's just on splines), get them dipped and knock the pin back in (with the plastic washer things)

Really?
Will be dropping a pair of body cappings in anyway.
I'd much prefer this route to aluminium/SS hinges,

Cool! Very Happy

Thanks Jim!

Is there enough clearance for the pins after hot dipping galv? What about galv 'snots'?

The holes might need drilling or reaming out after dipping??

Brendan is definitely right pointing out that you would almost certainly have to redrill the hole for the pin after galvanising. I shouldn't think there would be a clearance issue as the holes for the bulkhead flap pins are very tight and many people refit these after galvanising the bulkhead. Thumbs Up
Let us know how you get on. May well galvanise our hinges Thumbs Up

This will be a cheap experiment to do after all.
I think I'll give it a try.
I have been quoted a fixed sum up to 100kgs for the dip, and my cappings weigh less than 15kgs.
So, the dip is basically free for all the extra bits.

If you work out how thick the zinc layer is, you could drill out the holes prior to getting them dipped, then they'll just fit straight in afterwards.

My experience of galving parts that small is that may go missing and end up in the bottom of the tank. The shrug of shoulders from the galv company is little compensation.

Can cast metal be galved easily? Without changing the bath temperature and the immersion time it's going to be difficult to get right and many places won't want to change their processes for a small run.
