Bodywork Repair
I accidentally wrote off a Renault Clio a few months ago by backing into it and consequently have a small dent in the rear corner (the folded over bit and the side panel). Has anybody got any experience of repairing this sort of thing, can it just be bashed out or do I need to find a specialist in aluminium body repairs?

Anything is repairable with the right tools, post a pic of the damage so you can give an idea of the damage. Nick

I did my apprenticeship as a panel beater. That was over 20 years ago and I now sit in other peoples offices talking money out of them for a living!

You will need a panel hammer and a dolly, you will also need a more substantial hammer to get the corner panel square.

Remove indicator and possibly break light above.

Using the larger hammer hit from behind whilst holding the dolly on the corner panel until it's back to it's original shape. Then with the panel hammer do the same (panel hammer gets used on the outside of panel not the inside). You have a high spot that runs around in the dish above the rivits. Although not substantial it might require heating with gas and rapid cooling (rag and water) to shrink it (do this after the next step though). Once you have it close to it's original shape, sand the lot down to remove all the paint/primer, sand further back than the damage so that you can let the sprayers prime it up properly.

Now it's clean file it with a panel file to check for any high/low spots, your hand is the best tool for this though (checking not filing), get it perfect and finish any impurities with filler, expect abuse though cause filling is bodging! Sand the filler, check, sand, check, sand, check, if your not sure spray with a little black paint and check for any low spots. Re-fill if needed and repeat process.

Once complete stand back marvel in your repair and give it to the sprayers.

Or a much better option, leave it as a battle scar or pay someone else to do it Very Happy Nick

I've decided to go down the chequer plate route, will post some pics when done.

Black chequer plate with matching wingtops would look good on the silver!
