Fitting 3mm Chequer Plate Sill Guards
Hi all,
We pick up our new D90HTs tomorrow and plan to bolt on some side runners, steering guards and side sills.
The runners and steering guards should be easy enough but since i am having to drill holes to fit the sill guards i thought i should check if there is anything i should or should not be doing before i start?

I got the bolts and some spring nuts, but i wondered do i need anything else?

Cheers.

I always use a sealant between the cp and the bodywork to prevent any crud being sandwiched between the two. Once drilled treat the holes with touch-up and then wax the back of th cills.

yep make sure you paint the holes you have drilled because over time the steel with react with the ali causing bubbles Crying or Very sad counter sunk screws look much better than rivets imo try and get stainless ones Thumbs Up

I got these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defen...439ea5b8f9
But for the 90.
They are countersunk which is nice, and the paint job on them seemed well finished.

Ginjez,
What sealant do you recommend? i can get some tomorrow afternoon.

Bob,
What did Yeoville do to sort that please?

Killer,
Yes, i think the bolts we have are stainless and black.
I will look into getting some paint/touch up to treat the holes, maybe Halfords will have something.

Thanks for the replies all, appreciated. Smile

Adjusted the sills at the back. There is some play in the brackets that hold the sills and they adjusted these so the back doors would close. Pain of a job, I removed the sills to replace the rotten seal between the sill and the body and then spent a few hours trying to get the clearance to shut the doors.

I've never understood sill guards - you drill holes into something you're trying to protect, which themselves are only held on by a few bolts. Why not just take them off and put something better on? You can then replace the undamaged item when you want to sell it? Just my thoughts... I'll get my coat. Peter

Thanks Mr Flips,
I take your point, but i have them bought now and i think they will do the job well enough though.

I am thinking i might line the inside of the guards with a strip of this in each:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEOPRENE-RUBBER-...814wt_1039

I got some extra nylon washers to keep the nuts off the sills and some black silicone to keep the bolts off the new holes too.

If i get it done this weekend ill post some pics, steering guards and side steps first though i think, as it is rain forecast for tomorrow. Sad

Reviving an old thread... Just gone to fit some and they won't fit under the doors either!

How much adjustment is there in the sill? The gap under the front passenger door is about twice as big at the front as it is at the back! The plate only fits under the drivers door - all the others would rub...

Don't bother trying to adjust the sills, adjust the doors to give a uniform gap along the sill/door gap and the 3mm will fit a treat.
Plenty of paint and then wax oil on the driiled holes to prevent the good old electrolytic action between the steel and aluminium.

The jobs a good un. Thumbs Up You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

Is that just a case of slackening the door hinges, packing under the door & then tightening everything up, or is there more too it than that?

Thumbs Up Rock sliders with or without tree bars are proper protection. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender
