water in my tank by mistake
I forgot to replace my fuel cap after filling with diesel, then went to the car wash...
I know... i know...
So now what? Do i just keep a close eye on the water trap? Or must i do something else?
Thanks www.ralton.co.za

Personally I would get the tank drained out if I was you that way at least no more damage can be done. Then re fill with fresh.

Detergent in the fuel could be lethal.

Drain the fuel filter for the next few days into a clear container, this way you will see if water is in the fuel. eventually you will get rid of the water. 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

As Andrew says Cool

If water is present, it will sit in the bottom of the fuel filter [being 'heavier' than diesel] as and if is drawn up.
Keep a close eye on it for a week or so Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

What about adding meths to the tank as water is absorbed into the meths which will pass through the system (remember reading something about water contamination on a RAC rally years ago and all the local Welsh towns selling out of meths) - or is that only for a petrol engine?

I would drain the tank, flush, and refil. The cost of the diesel to do this will be minor compared with replacing the fuel injectors, pump, etc. The fuel filter water trap is only capable of stopping a very small amount of water.

Wonder if you could use something like a Delphi 296 filter on Land Rovers which removes dirt and separates water. They are used on boats so would need something to cope with a bigger flow rate...

Yep, don't take any chances.

Also try to flush the fuel lines with clean diesel. --

I would be less worried about the water that the other crap that will have got it, from dirt particulates to detergent. I think you would be foolish not to drain the tank completely and change the filter, and after refilling with clean fuel and running for a week or so I would change the filter again.

A tank of fuel and a couple of filters will cost much less than a new engine.
