Shouldn't be anywhere near needing a new cross member surely? Shocked

Release bearing, if it's just noisy I'd leave it, they really do all do that. Most only do it from cold.

Td5 rear crossmembers are just incredibly bad. Made from wafer-thin steel and full of mud/water traps. If you do replace it don't just stick another POS Td5 Land Rover one on. Get one from one of the companies making proper-thickness ones like MIB Components.

I have seen 2001/2002/2003 cars with gaping holes in the back of the chassis, funnily enough my 1993 110 was only just encountering some surface rust Smile

I don't know if they've improved it for the Tdci models, I hope they have.

The reason I posted that was that my old V-plate 90 still had no visible corrosion anywhere on the chassis at 10 years old. The rear x-member was totally solid. Fair enough I looked after it, but I did off-road it and leave it covered in crap too. Didn't think they were that bad TBH, but I'm happy that mine was the exception to the rule Confused

New one seems pretty solid too, but that's only 6 years old.

Indeed, it depends how it's looked after. I have a 1992 90 that evidently hasn't been in its previous life, so it's had a new rear crossmember and various other patches from me. A Td5 that has been looked after should still be OK, as yours proves Smile

But the metal is far thinner on a Td5, which makes them very prone to rotting through, And the design with that silly hole for the towing socket doesn't help things either.

The one I have got has never been offroad but it has spent the last 10 years in Portland so I would expect some problems with rust.

The rest of the chassis looks fine and two of us had a damn good inspection of it to make sure it was OK.

The guy who looked at it with me is just putting a new chassis on a series 3 and has had land Rovers since he could drive. His opinion was the same as Retro's, TD5 rear crossmembers are not good. He did fit a new one to a 110 and said it would have been better to put a new chassis on.

Thanks for the heads up on MIB Retro, just had a look on their site Thumbs Up

Picked it up Thumbs Up

Drives like a dream, not bouncy like the 90 Pumas I have driven but that could be down to the tired suspension.

Had time to look round before dark, rear cross member not that bad (has had an advisory for the last five years Shocked ), rest of the chassis looks good. Couple of areas of bubbling paintwork to sort and, bodywise, thats it.
I will have a galv chassis fitted this year.

Front and rear diff pinion seals are leaking, I will check the breathers at the weekend to make sure that is not the problem.

As twopoint6khz said, release bearing shuts up after 5 minutes so that is being left alone.

And the engine sound (without a decat and centre box removed - yet Laughing ) - fantastic Thumbs Up

The really bad point (apologies to dog owners - I have owned dogs for many years but not recently so am not biased) - the stench of wet dog inside Crying or Very sad

First job is to bin all the carpets, remove the seats and headling and give everything a damn good airing.

It is having rubber mats fitted throughout, probably get the Exmoor R380 set, not cheap but all I can find at the moment.

Overall, very happy - pictures at the weekend Thumbs Up

Sounds great Bob. Yes, carpets and dogs don't mix at all least of all wet ones Laughing Far easier to clean and keep clean having rubber throughout. Look forward to seeing your pics. Thumbs Up

Work done.

New drivers and passenger doors fitted.

Steering guard fitted (Bearmach)
Silver CP replaced by Mammouth black version
Mantec snorkel fitted

All above from site sponsors Defenderbits Thumbs Up

New rear headling courtesy of site sponsors Duckworths - not sure if I should thank you or curse you Dan - it was a ****** to fit Laughing

All interior stripped of wet dog smelling carpet etc. rear fully sound proofed and rubber mat put in.
Top part of dog guard found and fitted.

Rock sliders fitted to replace sills.
CB installed.
All instrument lights replaced by LED's - what a difference Thumbs Up
Crystals and night breakers fitted, with stainless rims from Mobilecentre and new levelling motors installed.

Windscreen hinges replaced with new ones sprayed black.
Nato hitch and reinforcing kit fitted to rear cross member.

Start made on the body work. Not a vast amount mainly bubbling on the ali plus bimetalic corrosion under the old CP that has spread (you can see an area at the rear that has been taken back to metal and etch primed.

Still to do.

New wheels and tyres.
Winch and bumper.
New shocks and probably front springs.
Sound proof and finish rubber matting in the front.
Finish the paintwork.
I may also put new discs on when doing the suspension, the old ones will probably need replacing before the end of the year.

Getting there Thumbs Up
