TD5 fuel pump on the way out?
When I go to start the Landie in the morning - even after a mild night, I have noticed over the last few weeks that whine from the fuel pump is much louder and more of a high pitch.

Once warmed up, all is good again, and if I go to start the car at any point in the day - even after being idle whilst at work (even over 10 hours) the problem is not there...

I am guessing that the fuel pump is on it's way out? Would that make sense? It is a 52 plate TD5 90 with around 62k miles

Cheers
Andrew.

Having exactly the same problem. Pressure tested pump-ok. Injector seals are prime suspect now.

yep highly recommend changing the injector seals/washers, my 90 02 with 50k mileage suffered the same problems two weeks back, the whine got louder and the car got harder to start at one point it didnt want to start without me pressing down the accelerator pedal down fully whilst turning the key, i thought the worst the pump but lucky enough changed the seals and now is as good as new Bow down Thumbs Up £20 job instead of a £300.00 job Wink

Changing the seals, is that a big job? Specialist tools required?

Thanks
Andrew

basically
remove engine cover
remove rocker cover
disconnect harness ontop
undo and remove the injectors a bar with a hook is needed as they can be a pain Rolling Eyes
change the sills one by one
jack one wheel up and turn the wheel turning the landy over
getting each injector to the maximum adjustment and do up
put it all back together job done Thumbs Up
im sure if you do a google there would be a pictured guide matey Cool

Check the mesh screen filter on the fuel pressure regulator, located on the rear of the cylinder head.

I had the same symptoms once and after replacing the fuel pump to no avail, checked the FPR filter and found it blocked with black sludge. Richard

Either a 90, 110 or 130.

Cool - thanks

Will have a look - changing the seals is much more wallet friendly than the pump Very Happy

And don't forget to follow the workshop instructions including how to set bump clearances, otherwise you'll end up with a smashed up injector unit.
