Visco fan in high altitude
Does anyone have experiences what the visco fan does in high altitudes?

Mine kicks in permanently in about 2500m. That costs power and makes also this horrible noise. Have listened to other TD4s which did not make the same, but did not have the chance to find out if they start to do a similar thing maybe higher up still. I can imagine that it might kick in permanently in high altitude due to the change in pressure, the question is just when, as 2500m shall not be something extraordinary. I guess...

According to the clueless dealer it is like that.

IMHO: altitude should not make any difference, the fans speed is dictated by the viscosity of the oil in the viscous unit and the temperature.

Echo what the BP-meister says.

I regularly use my vehicle at around 2600m (accompanied by customers in their 2.4 TDCi vehicles) and have not noticed any noise from theirs or mine.

Is your vehicle and air-con model? Also, does it make a difference what the external temperature is? Finally, did you notice any fluctuation of the temperature gauge from the norm?

regards

Ian

Thanks for the replies so far.

The car got AC, but it does not matter if that is on or off, the fan keeps on turning. I anyway switch the AC rather off. I did not notice a change in the temperature gauge and we are talking about temperatures above 10°C where I noticed it. At least I do not remember right now what it did in winter time when it was below zero.

Then I will keep on discussing with the dealer. Although that may mean they will have to an extensive test drive.

AlpenAndes,

In same conditions in Paso Libertadores (3.000 mts), Los Andes (3,500 mts), Valle nevado (3,000 mts) and El Yeso (2,700 mts) I didnt remember that the fan was working all the time.

Cheers Eduardo

There is a barometric sensor in the Powertrain ECU, but this tends to make changes to the way the turbocharger operates.

the viscous unit may be faulty, try changing the fan unit

you can test it. when the engine is cold and not running, contact off, try to move the fan with your hand. if it runs freely all is ok, if it does not, it is faulty.

by the way a viscous fan always turns when the engine is on, never sits still, albeit does not turn at full speed if it is not necessary. when driving in the mountains, my personal experience is that the engine needs to work harder, and fan more often than on flat surfaces will keep turning at higher speeds in order to cool everything down. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Thanks ericvv, will check that next time if the fan moves freely.
Guess that also cost some hp of the anyway few the thing carries originally.

Eduardo, all this nice places with the fan running as well when crossing Paso Sico 4100, San Francisco 4700, Agua Negra in 4700m this summer before the Bolivian Winter. Had to leave Paso Pircas Negras for another year, Carabineros said it is not recommended after the rain started and saw on Ruta 40 what it means when the rain in the Andes washes away a road.

Saludos
Oskar

Probably at those altitudes you need to push the gas pedal more than usual which makes the engine hotter and you can not be see any change on the temp gauge. Over 95° or do I can hear the fan spinning. Puma 110" SW
