Yes not really effective in non-conductive air. I suppose because you fitted them you care and maybe just wash your car more or in general look after it better. So it works very well as a placebo rust protection!

In Europe where there is salt used a weekly wash-down in winter does wonders. Its the drive and forget mentality that makes cars rot.

Actually modern cars expire not because of rust but because of electronics, batteries and now more and more software and end of over-the-air support after <10 years. We gone full circle with cars lasting as long as they did in the '70s!

dinitrol the Galvanised Chassis or leave alone?

Any thoughts to help me decide what to do please?

I have spent some time fixing various leaks on my 84 One Ten and ready now (after changing the rear pinion seal and shaft) to treat/paint the axles and non galvanised steel brackets etc.

The One Ten has a galvanised chassis now about 15 years old. I intended to treat it to a coating of 4941 over 1000 (at the recommendation of Ziggato of this forum).

However having cleaned off the dusting of Somerset dust (where it lived for 40+ years) the chassis is remarkably clean. Being galvanised I can see into the outriggers and all are good. Before I do anything some thoughts on the options below -

1) do I cover it all in dinitrol (no going back and it will be harder to see what is going on? ) or
2) leave alone and washable ? (easier to clean?)

I intend to spray the internal chassis rails with 1000 clear regardless of a or b above.

Just not sure what to do. Some photos below to give an idea of the condition. Any advice welcome & thanks

1983 Defender 110 Other HT Auto Keswick Green

I’m no expert but if it was mine I’d treat it. When I rebuilt my 110 I painted the new galvanised chassis black along with everything else individually before assembling. It looked like a brand new car for a while! After I used it for twelve months I sprayed it underneath with 4941 (black). It doesn’t get washed underneath very often and I live at the end of a 1/4 mile muddy track, so it’s always muddy. I did this a couple of years ago now and it looks great ( under the mud!) The only extra things I did was to make up some rubber arches to help stop the mud from sitting on outriggers etc. It’s well worth doing.
