Series 1s started off with 1.6 litre petrols, then went up to 2 litres in about 1951 I think.

So you'd be better off with the Td5 then? 
imho the TD5 is more of a deafener ... had one to drive for a ride and the PI Diesel engine was kinda noisy, or military jet so to say

I'd hurry & get the 2.4. Any engineer will tell you: extracting more power from a smaller engine will only result in more stress, leading to an early failure.
