Ed,
I have a TD5 axle tube from a 2003 110.
No diff or brake calipers but it is straight with no damage.

Currently in storage so can't get photos quickly.

Had exactly the same symptoms a few months back.
It turned out to be a worn starter solenoid. They are cheap to replace, about £10 from ebay (an ebay search reveals a number of suppliers)
