Yes, put the 'u' bend in as a bit of added protection from water splashes.
For proper wading the mesh filter unscrews and I can fit a bung.

Number of cylinders has nothing to do with a rev counter that takes a feed from the alternator.

Some rev counters for petrol engines take a pulse from the ignition and so are switchable for 4 or 8 ...
